Christ, The Prophet: Law

Christ, The Prophet: Law

Christ, The Prophet: Law

“The Lord your God will raise up for you a Prophet like me from your midst, from your brethren. Him you shall hear….”

Deuteronomy 18:15

As we consider Christ in the fulfillment of His Office as Mediator, we come first to meditate upon His function as Prophet. This brings us to our text for today. Moses was the quintessential Old Testament Prophet. The prophet is that man appointed by God to speak, on His behalf, to the people. He must receive the Word of God, and then declare the Word of God. Moses particularly, stands as the prophet who received the Law. To this day, the Jews refer to the five Books of Moses as, The Law. The Ten Commandments lie at the heart of The Law. Moses received them from God in the mount, and gave them to the people. Having said that, God never intended adherence to the Law to be a means of salvation. Paul makes that clear, ‘Therefore the law was our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith.’ Christ, the Prophet like Moses, also spoke about the Law. In the Sermon on the mount, He expounds, not just the letter of the Law, but the spirit of the Law. Having said that, the Law, as stated by Christ in the Sermon on the Mount is no more a means of salvation than the Law which came through Moses. The Law in letter, and the Law in spirit brings us inevitably to Christ. Again, Paul declares, ‘Therefore let it be known to you, brethren, that through this Man is preached to you the forgiveness of sins; and by Him everyone who believes is justified from all things from which you could not be justified by the law of Moses.’ The Law from the mount of old, and the Law from the mount in the new agree, it is Christ Alone for salvation. This is the overarching message of the prophets, ‘To Him all the prophets witness that, through His name, whoever believes in Him will receive remission of sins.’ It is our message, and our sincere desire that you receive it, and Him.

Our Great and Gracious God,
we rejoice in Christ, our Prophet,
We praise You that He brings Your Message unto us,
and seals it to our hearts by His Holy Spirit.

Scripture:  Deuteronomy 18:15-19

“The Lord your God will raise up for you a Prophet like me from your midst, from your brethren. Him you shall hear,  according to all you desired of the LORD your God in Horeb in the day of the assembly, saying, ‘Let me not hear again the voice of the LORD my God, nor let me see this great fire anymore, lest I die.’ “And the LORD said to me: ‘What they have spoken is good. I will raise up for them a Prophet like you from among their brethren, and will put My words in His mouth, and He shall speak to them all that I command Him. And it shall be that whoever will not hear My words, which He speaks in My name, I will require it of him.

Sermon:  Christ, The Prophet

  1.  Christ is the Prophet like Moses because He speaks about the Law.
  2. Christ is the Prophet like Moses because He points us to the Lamb.
  3. Christ is the Prophet like Moses because He brings us from bondage to freedom.

Catechism:  Westminster Shorter Catechism Question #95

To whom is Baptism to be administered?

Baptism is not to be administered to any that are out of the visible church, till they profess their faith in Christ, and obedience to him; but the infants of such as are members of the visible church are to be baptized.

1 Acts 2:41. Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls. Acts 8:12, 36, 38. But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women…. And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized?… And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him. Acts 18:8. And Crispus, the chief ruler of the synagogue, believed on the Lord with all his house; and many of the Corinthians hearing believed, and were baptized.
2 Genesis 17:7. And I will establish my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after thee in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee, and to thy seed after thee. Genesis 17:9-11. And God said unto Abraham, Thou shalt keep my covenant therefore, thou, and thy seed after thee in their generations. This is my covenant, which ye shall keep, between me and you and thy seed after thee; Every man child among you shall be circumcised. And ye shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskin; and it shall be a token of the covenant betwixt me and you. Acts 2:38-39. Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call. Acts 16:32-33. And they spake unto him the word of the Lord, and to all that were in his house. And he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their stripes; and was baptized, he and all his, straightway. Colossians 2:11-12. In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ: Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.
