Scripture: Ephesians 4:1-13; Jude 1:3

I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called, With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; One Lord, one faith, one baptism, One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all. But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ. Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men. (Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth? He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.) And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:

Beloved, while I was very diligent to write to you concerning our common salvation, I found it necessary to write to you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to your saints.

What is the Lord’s Supper?

The Lord’s Supper is a sacrament, wherein, by giving and receiving bread and wine, according to Christ’s appointment, his death is showed forth, and the worthy receivers are, not after a corporal and carnal manner, but by faith, made partakers of his body and blood, with all his benefits, to their spiritual nourishment, and growth in grace.

Scripture: Ephesians 4:1-13

Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, to the saints which are at Ephesus, and to the faithful in Christ Jesus: Grace be to you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ: According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love: Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will, To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved. In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace; Wherein he hath abounded toward us in all wisdom and prudence; Having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself: 10 That in the dispensation of the fulness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in him: 11 In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will: 12 That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ. 13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,

To whom is Baptism to be administered?

Baptism is not to be administered to any that are out of the visible church, till they profess their faith in Christ, and obedience to him; but the infants of such as are members of the visible church are to be baptized.

Having Believed, You Were Sealed

Having Believed, You Were Sealed

In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with the holy Spirit of promise.

Ephesians 1:13

The Holy Spirit seals us in Christ.  He does so very much in the same way in which the Scripture tells us when Noah and his family had entered into the ark, that, ‘the Lord shut him in.’ The Holy Spirit, having brought us to life from our spiritual deadness; granted us repentance; given us faith to believe; and effectually called us, also seals us in Christ.  This is part of the real-time experience of salvation.  One of the great effects of this sealing is that the Holy Spirit testifies with our spirit that we are the children of God.  This contributes to that blessed assurance that Christ is ours and we are His.  The Holy Spirit Who seals us in Christ is, as Paul describes Him, ‘the Holy Spirit of promise.’  He is Who we have in real-time until the whole of redemption is complete in eternity.  Beyond sealing us in Christ, the Holy Spirit indwells us.  Because this is so integrally apart of what it means to be in Christ, it has always been the case in all of the redeemed in every age.  It is by indwelling those whom He has sealed, the Holy Spirit ‘renews us in the whole person after the image of God and enables us to die more and more unto sin and to live unto righteousness.’  We are in Christ, cannot be removed from Christ, and look forward to being like Christ.

Our Glorious, Living Savior,
We rejoice that Your Holy Spirit has sealed us into You.
We praise You for His ongoing Work to sanctify us
and conform us to Your Image

In Him You Also Trusted

In Him You Also Trusted

In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with the holy Spirit of promise.

Ephesians 1:13

The experience of salvation involves trust in Christ.  As Paul is describing the experience of the Ephesians, he says, ‘In Him you also trusted after you heard the word of truth.’  We have spoken of the outward call of the gospel and of the effectual call.  We now come to speak of trust in Christ.  There are two parts to this discussion.  Trust is an act that results from faith.  Faith ‘is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.’  We put our trust actively into that in which we have faith.  If you have faith that an airplane is able to take you to your desired destination, you place your trust in that plane by physically boarding it.  We have faith in Christ that He is able to save us eternally.  He is ‘able to save to the uttermost, all who come to God by Him.’  Because we have this faith which God has given us as a gift, we trust in Christ, after we have heard ‘the word of truth.’  This is the real-time experience of salvation.  This is that which we continually invite all whom we encounter to do, who have not, as yet, done it.  It is the glorious message of the people of God to point others to Christ.  It is to Christ that we continually point you, who are the readers of this little work. It is our sincere desire that you should trust in Christ and rest by faith in Him for your soul’s salvation.

Our Gracious God and our Savior,
we rejoice that You are utterly trustworthy.
We praise You that having proclaimed unto us Your Word,
You enable us to hear it and to trust in You.

Catechism: Westminster Shorter Catechism Question #61

What is forbidden in the fourth commandment?

The fourth commandment forbiddeth the omission, or careless performance, of the duties required, and the profaning the day by idleness, or doing that which is in itself sinful, or by unnecessary thoughts, words, or works, about our worldly employments or recreations.

Nehemiah 13:15-22 In those days saw I in Judah some treading wine presses on the sabbath, and bringing in sheaves, and lading asses; as also wine, grapes, and figs, and all manner of burdens, which they brought into Jerusalem on the sabbath day: and I testified against them in the day wherein they sold victuals. There dwelt men of Tyre also therein, which brought fish, and all manner of ware, and sold on the sabbath unto the children of Judah, and in Jerusalem. Then I contended with the nobles of Judah, and said unto them, What evil thing is this that ye do, and profane the sabbath day? Did not your fathers thus, and did not our God bring all this evil upon us, and upon this city? yet ye bring more wrath upon Israel by profaning the sabbath. And it came to pass, that when the gates of Jerusalem began to be dark before the sabbath, I commanded that the gates should be shut, and charged that they should not be opened till after the sabbath: and some of my servants set I at the gates, that there should no burden be brought in on the sabbath day. So the merchants and sellers of all kind of ware lodged without Jerusalem once or twice. Then I testified against them, and said unto them, Why lodge ye about the wall? if ye do so again, I will lay hands on you. From that time forth came they no more on the sabbath. And I commanded the Levites that they should cleanse themselves, and that they should come and keep the gates, to sanctify the sabbath day. Remember me, O my God, concerning this also, and spare me according to the greatness of thy mercy. Isaiah 58:13-14 If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the LORD, honorable; and shalt honor him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words: Then shalt thou delight thyself in the LORD; and I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the arth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it.
