His Servants

His Servants

He shall see the labor of His soul, and be satisfied.
By His knowledge My righteous Servant shall justify many,
For He shall bear their iniquities.

Isaiah 53:11

And there shall be no more curse, but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it, and His servants shall serve Him. They shall see His face, and His name shall be on their foreheads. There shall be no night there: They need no lamp nor light of the sun, for the Lord God gives them light. And they shall reign forever and ever.

Revelation 22: 3-5

Christ will be completely satisfied with the results of the labor of His soul. He predicted the results when He said, ‘All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will by no means cast out.’ The first part of our text declares He will be satisfied. The second part or our text depicts the completion of the prophecy. All the people Father gave Him appear in the last scene. Here is the conclusion of the whole matter. Christ is reigning; the curse of sin is gone, His servants are serving Him in the eternal state; ‘and they shall reign forever and ever.’ All Christ endured by ‘the labor of His soul,’ comes to a satisfying conclusion. In the midst of chaotic times, it is most useful for us to lift up our eyes to behold the conclusion. Christ has not failed, is not failing, and shall not fail. He said, ‘I will build my church’ and He does. When all His people, who are His church, arrive in the eternal state safe and sound, the picture will be complete. ‘He shall see the labor of His soul, and shall be satisfied.’ Christ is the future of His people. Our desire is that you embrace Him Who has labored so greatly and suffered so deeply. Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you shall be saved.

High King of Heaven,
we rejoice that You will accomplish everything You have intended.
We praise You that every knee shall bow,
and every tongue confess that You are Lord.

In My Father’s Kingdom

In My Father’s Kingdom

He shall see the labor of His soul, and be satisfied.
By His knowledge My righteous Servant shall justify many,
for He shall bear their iniquities.

Isaiah 53:11

For this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. But I say to you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in My Father’s kingdom.’

Matthew 26:28-29

Christ waits for His redeemed. As He spoke with His disciples on the night before He went to the cross, He instituted the communion feast. As He gave them the cup, He uttered the words that are the second portion of our text. There are several things which, by their existence refer to the subject of the Isaiah text. He says, ‘This is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many….’ Isaiah says, He ‘shall justify many.’ Christ said He would gather both the sheep of His flock from Israel and also His sheep from the flock of the Gentiles until they were all in one fold with one Shepherd. John identifies them as ‘a great multitude which no one could number.’ This is the many for whom Christ shed His blood. He goes on to say He will not drink of the fruit of the vine anymore, ‘until that day when I drink it new with you in My Father’s Kingdom.’ Christ is reserving Himself from participating in the fullness of celebration until all for whom He died gather together at the Marriage Supper of the Lamb. This will be the gathering of the many. As He said, ‘many will come from east and west, and sit down with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven.’ On that great occasion, Christ shall celebrate the satisfying result of His work.

Our Glorious Living Christ,
we rejoice at the day that is coming,
when we shall so You Face to face.
We praise You that You graciously wait for us.

A Great Multitude

A Great Multitude

He shall see the labor of His soul, and be satisfied.
By His knowledge My righteous Servant shall justify many,
For He shall bear their iniquities.

Isaiah 53:11

After these things I looked, and behold, a great multitude which no one could number, of all nations, tribes, peoples, and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, with palm branches in their hands, and crying out with a loud voice, saying, Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!

Revelation 7:9-10

Christ’s work of redemption is a large work. We do Him a disservice by relegating it to a being for a small group. While we may apply the ‘few there be that find it’ to a given moment of history and a specific context, when we take the broad view over the course of history we arrive at the conclusion that He redeems ‘a great multitude.’ He is abundantly inclusive in His redemption. These are people, ‘of all nations, tribes, peoples, and tongues.’ Christ has shed His blood ‘for many, for the remission of sins.’ Therefore, because we see this great multitude gathered around the Throne of Grace, we conclude that Christ is abundantly satisfied with the results of ‘the labor of His soul.’ He came ‘to seek and to save that which was lost.’ He laid down His life and endured great anguish in the spiritual birthing of His people. He is abundantly satisfied with the success of His work. He speaks to His redeemed directly from His Judgment Throne and says, ‘Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.’ Christ, seeing the end from the beginning, and the joy that was set before Him, endured the suffering, rose from the dead, and sits upon His Throne abundantly satisfied.

Our Glorious, Saving God,
we rejoice in Your Grand Redemption.
We praise You that You will save a great multitude,
and that Christ shall have first place.

Christ’s Successful Work

Christ’s Successful Work

He shall see the labor of His soul, and be satisfied.
By His knowledge My righteous Servant shall justify many,
For He shall bear their iniquities.

Isaiah 53:11

Your people shall be volunteers
In the day of Your power;
In the beauties of holiness, from the womb of the morning,
You have the dew of Your youth.

Psalm 110:3

When Christ said, ‘I will build My church,’ He was not referring to the institution as we tend to refer to it. He was speaking of His gathering of His people who are all the redeemed of all ages. That is the church of Jesus Christ. The ancient prophets were aware of this. David gives expression to it in the verse which forms the second portion of our text. The first portion of our text alludes to this success by saying, ‘He shall see the labor of His soul.’ To follow the metaphor, when a woman labors in childbirth she has great anguish and hardship. This often lasts for an extended period of time, which the natural course of childbirth requires. At the end of that, the child arrives. The midwife gives the child to the mother and she sees the labor of her soul. She holds the child she birthed with anguish and labor. The birth has been successful. Thus, Christ sees the labor of His soul with the gathering together of all His bloodbought people. His people are volunteers in the day of His power.  Christ has succeeded, is succeeding, and shall succeed, until all the ransomed church of God is saved to sin no more.

Our Glorious, Living Christ,
we rejoice that You will succeed in all Your work.
We praise You that You will gather together
all whom You have redeemed.

The Labor Of His Soul

The Labor Of His Soul

He shall see the labor of His soul, and be satisfied. By His knowledge My righteous Servant shall justify many, for He shall bear their iniquities.

Isaiah 53:11

Christ endured great anguish of soul in His passion and death. Matthew quotes Him as saying, ‘My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death.’ The scene in the Garden is one of great anguish where He ‘sweat as it were, great drops of blood.’ Some of the cries from the cross were expressions of extreme anguish. This indicates, ‘the labor of His soul.’ The prophet employs the language of childbirth. The word translated ‘travail’ or ‘labor’ is the one used for the anguish of birth with its’ pangs. Christ describes it, not in reference to Himself, but to the disciples when He says, ‘A woman, when she is in labor, has sorrow because her hour has come; but as soon as she has given birth to the child, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world.’  This describes ‘the labor of His soul.’ Psalm 22, which graphically depicts the crucifixion of Christ, uses the words Christ quoted from the cross, ‘My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me? Why are You so far from helping Me, and from the words of My groaning?’ These are the utterances of the anguished soul. Why should we dwell upon these things? We should behold the anguish of Christ in order to more fully comprehend the cost of our redemption. This was no easy birth, but was long, arduous painful, and agonizing. This was the labor of Christ’s soul. As we gaze upon Him in the depths of His agony, we come to value Him more highly and appreciate Him more deeply.

Our Gracious, Loving Savior,
we rejoice that You were willing to endure such agony for us.
We praise You that You were willing to endure it
because of the great purpose You would accomplish.
