Scripture: Ephesians 2:14-18

Wherefore remember, that ye being in time past Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision by that which is called the Circumcision in the flesh made by hands; That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants fo promise, having no hope, and without God in the world: But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ. For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us; Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace; And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enemy thereby: And came and preached peace to you which were afar off, and to them that were nigh. For through him we both have access by on Spirit unto the Father.

Scripture: Ephesians 2:4-10

But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus: That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus. For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in him.

Bearing In Love

Bearing In Love

With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love.

Ephesians 4:2

‘Bear with me, please.’  If we hear that request, we understand that the person who makes it is bidding for our patience, understanding, tolerance and acceptance, even though what they are saying or doing may be pushing the boundaries of acceptability.  In our text for today, the Apostle Paul calls upon the Ephesians, and us really, to ‘bear with one another in love.’  Christ affords us a multitude of examples of this ‘bearing in love’ by His interactions with the disciples.  The disciples were idiosyncratic, and spiritually immature.  At one point they were wanting to call down fire on those who did not receive them.  On another occasion, they were forbidding someone else from proclaiming Christ because he ‘followed not with us.’  Christ was continually forbearing with them because of His great love for them.  From the example of Christ, we learn how to be gracious in our ‘bearing with one another in love.’  We all have our idiosyncrasies, and can behave in spiritually immature ways from time to time.  The ‘bearing with one another in love’ is an imitation of Christ.  We will both give it on the one hand and need it from others on the other.  As we look to Christ, we can have confidence that He, by His Holy Spirit, will enable us to ‘bear with one another in love.’

Our most Gracious and most Patient God,
we rejoice that You are forbearing with us.
We praise You that in spite of our weaknesses,
You continually bear with us until You conform us
to the mirror-image of Christ.

Longsuffering

Longsuffering

With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love.

Ephesians 4:2

What is it to be longsuffering?  It is not a word we commonly use.  At the heart of longsuffering is patience.  Patience is a flower which does not naturally grow in anyone’s garden.  Longsuffering appears in the list of ‘the fruit of the Spirit.’  Therefore we understand that it is the result of the planting and nurturing of God.  Because Christ has the Spirit without measure, He demonstrates patience to the most extraordinary degree.  Therefore, if we want to see patience become a practical reality, we must of necessity, look to Christ.  We cannot force ourselves to demonstrate what the Spirit of Christ alone can practically effect in us.  All our personal resolutions will fail.  A clear sight of Christ and the planting and nurturing of His Holy Spirit will accomplish in us what all our attempts at personal reformation will not do.  As we looked to Christ to save us and the Holy Spirit did all that was necessary to bring us to Him, so we look to Christ to work in us the longsuffering by the Holy Spirit that will make us truly like Christ.  This is a virtue we greatly desire and rather than find ourselves frustrated with our inability to achieve it of ourselves, let us look to Christ to work it in us by His Spirit.

Our Good and Wise God,
we rejoice that You will work in us
all that conforms us to the Image of Christ.
We praise You that as we look to Christ,
the Holy Spirit will work in us that longsuffering
which is such a hallmark of His Character.

Scripture: Ephesians 2:1-7

And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; Wherein time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.

Catechism: Westminster Shorter Catechism Question # 62

What are the reasons annexed to the fourth commandment?

The reasons annexed to the fourth commandment are, God’s allowing us six days of the week for our own employments, his challenging a special propriety in the seventh, his own example, and his blessing the sabbath day.

Exodus 20:9 Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: Exodus 31:15 Six days may work be done; but in the seventh is the sabbath of rest, holy to the LORD: whosoever doeth any work in the sabbath day, he shall surely be put to death. Leviticus 23:3 Six days shall work be done: but the seventh day is the sabbath of rest, an holy convocation; ye shall do no work therein: it is the sabbath of the LORD in all your dwellings. Genesis 2:2-3 And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made. Exodus 20:11 For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it. Exodus 31:17 It is a sign between me and the children of Israel for ever: for in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested, and was refreshed.
