Christ, The Prophet: The Lamb

Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year. You may take it from the sheep or from the goats. Now you shall keep it until the fourteenth day of the same month. Then the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it at twilight.

Exodus 12: 5,6

As we continue our meditations upon the ways in which Christ is the Prophet like Moses, we come to consider the Passover Lamb. Recall, we said that the prophet is one who receives the Word from God and then delivers it to the people. So, with regard to the Paschal lamb, Moses received instructions as to what the people of Israel were to do to escape the wrath and judgment of God which He would bring upon Egypt on the night of the Passover. Moses faithfully relayed that message to them. The heart of message was life by the sacrifice of the lamb and by the application of his blood. Christ is the Prophet like Moses, in that He likewise points to the sacrifice of Himself and the application of His Blood as that which secures life, in the face of certain death. He declared, ‘the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.’ The message of John the Baptist was, ‘Behold the Lamb of God, Who takes away the sin of the world.’ The vision of Christ in heaven which John had was first of ‘a Lamb as though it had been slain,’ and then later, ‘a Lamb standing on Mount Zion.’ From the ancient message of Moses when he instituted the Passover, to the last writer of God’s revelation, the common theme is, ‘Christ, Our Passover is sacrificed for us.’ As the Catechism asserts, ‘Christ executes the office of a prophet, in revealing to us, by His Word and Spirit, the will of God for our salvation.’

Our Gracious and Loving Christ,
we rejoice that You are the Lamb of God,
Who takes a way the sin of the world.
We praise You, that every message which You deliver unto us,
points us to Your Own Great Self.

The Blood of the Lamb: Divinely Observed

The Blood of the Lamb: Divinely Observed

The Blood of the Lamb: Divinely Observed

Now the blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you are. And when I see the blood, I will pass over you; and the plague shall not be on you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt.

Exodus 12:13

God made a striking statement about the blood of the lamb which the people of Israel applied by Divine Ordination, to the lintel and doorposts of their houses upon the occasion of the first Passover. He said, in the verse, which serves as our text for today, ‘when I see the blood, I will pass over you.’ Because we understand that God is here pointing us to Christ, to Whom the New Testament refers as ‘our Passover,’ Who ‘is sacrificed for us,’ we also understand that the application of the Blood of Christ is important to us. It is beyond controversy that God is ‘the Judge of all the earth.’ He will, without fail bring judgment upon humanity. Yet the Scripture also makes clear that it is the application of the Blood of Christ, as observed by the Judge Himself, that makes the difference between salvation and damnation. On that fateful night in Egypt, it was not the Blood in the basin which availed to avert death. It was the blood applied and observed by God Himself that availed and prevailed to avert judgment. We write primarily to encourage the people of God, but, we would be remiss to fail to ask is the Blood Mark of Christ upon your soul, for God to see?  For your soul’s sake, do not allow the day to end without you knowing that the blood has been applied to your own soul.  ‘Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you shall be saved.’

Our most Gracious Saving God,
we rejoice today in the Blood of the Everlasting Covenant,
that speaks better things then that of Abel’s.
We rejoice in the application of the Blood, and the Redemption that it brings.

The Blood of the Lamb: Divinely Ordered

The Blood of the Lamb: Divinely Ordered

The Blood of the Lamb: Divinely Ordered

And they shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and on the lintel of the houses where they eat it…Now the blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you are. And when I see the blood, I will pass over you; and the plague shall not be on you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt.

Exodus 12:7&13

The thirteenth chapter of the book of Exodus is rich in symbolism. Christ is everywhere in the verses which describe the ancient institution of the Passover. Paul confirms the legitimacy of this symbolism in 1 Corinthians when he says, ‘For even Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us.’ Critical to the Passover was the blood of the lamb. Moses makes mention of the application of it to the lintel and door posts in verse 7, ‘And they shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and on the lintel of the houses where they eat it.’ In verse 13, which completes our text for today, he expounds the significance of it. ‘For I will pass through the land of Egypt on that night, and will strike all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment: I am the Lord. Now the blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you are. And when I see the blood, I will pass over you; and the plague shall not be on you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt.’ These two verses, taken together lead us to but one conclusion upon which we may dwell today: the Blood of Christ is of Divine Ordination. It was God Himself Who introduced the blood as a thing of significance on the night of the first Passover. It was God Himself Who specified it’s application and its implication. It is not the invention of man. Therefore it is altogether appropriate for us to lay emphasis upon the saving Blood of Christ. As the book of Leviticus declares, ‘it is the blood that makes atonement for the soul.’ Peter draws the parallel when he says I Peter 1:18 & 19, ‘Knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.’  Today, let us contemplate the Divine Ordination of the Blood of Christ. If it is important to God, it should be important to us.

Our most Gracious, Saving God,
We rejoice that You have ordained
that the Saving Blood of Christ should avail for all our sin,
and that by it we are saved for all eternity.
