One Thing

And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.
Genesis 2:16-17
God has the right to make the rules. Because He is the Creator, He has the right to tell us what to do or not do. In the instance before us, God gave to Adam, a great deal of latitude. He said, ‘Of every tree of the garden, you may freely eat….’ He then laid down one rule, involving one tree and one command in relation to that tree. He said, in essence, ‘Do not eat the fruit from this one tree.’ What follows in the next chapter is what happened when Adam refused to obey God with regard to this one thing. What follows throughout history regarding the coming of the promised Redeemer; His perfect life, atoning death; resurrection; ascension; intercession, and return, demonstrates the extent to which God would go to redeem a fallen humanity. We magnify the Grace of God through Christ Who would accomplish this magnificent redemption of those who have been thoroughly affected by Adam’s sin. This points out to us the depth of our indebtedness to God through Christ for His abundant mercy and His amazing grace.
Our Kind and Gracious God,
we rejoice that You have shown Your compassion towards us.
We praise You that You have redeemed us through
free and sovereign Grace.
