Christ, the Heir of All Things

God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds.

Hebrews 1:1,2

Christ is the Once and Future King. Our text for today sounds that note clearly. ‘Whom He has appointed heir of all things.’ God the Father has, in essence, already set the Royal Diadem, upon the thorn-scarred Head of Christ. The Royal Robe of Rulership already rests upon His whip-lacerated shoulders. Already He sits upon the Throne, as ‘the Lamb that was slain.’  Already has the edict gone forth that, ‘every knee shall bow, and every tongue confess, that Jesus Christ is Lord.’ Christ is, the ‘Heir of all things.’ This is a statement, massive in its’ implications. There is no star or planet in any galaxy, no matter how far-flung of which Christ is not Lord. There is no living creature who can succeed in resisting His Will. There is no event which falls outside of His Providential Plan. Nations may be in upheaval; civilizations may both rise and crumble, but Christ will still be, the ‘Heir of all things.’ His ‘counsel shall stand, and He will do all His Pleasure.’ This is a source of delight and comfort for everyone who rests by faith, in Christ. We, who are saved, by Free and Sovereign Grace are today operating under the auspices of the One Who is the ‘Heir of all things.’ As those thus redeemed, we may approach the day with confidence knowing that Jesus never fails. He, Who is the ‘Heir of all things,’ will ‘perform the thing that is appointed for us,’ today and every day.

Our Gracious Master and Our God,
we rejoice in You today,
and in Your Rulership over us,
and over all things.
