What’s The Difference?

What’s The Difference?

For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ and him crucified.

I Corinthians 2:2

What is the difference between preaching Christ and other messages which people deem important?  Within Christianity, many teachers lay emphasis upon doctrine, experience, or adherence to commands.  None of these are without some value, but they are bereft of vitality apart from the Person and Work of Christ.  Others, both in the realm of Christianity and outside of it, emphasize social justice, equality, political agendas, rights, or other causes.  Again, some of these have merit, but they fall short of the value of the message of ‘Jesus Christ and Him crucified.’  Beyond that, some outside the pale of Christianity lay emphasis upon messages which totally oppose the very idea of God and are repudiations of the message of the forgiveness of sins, acceptance with God, and the transformation of the whole person after the image of Christ.  Above all these, shines the message of ‘Jesus Christ and Him crucified.’  Here is the answer to the human condition.  Here is the solution for the issues that plague us most individually and collectively.  It is the one that shines above all the others.  If we are to dedicate ourselves to the communication which will do the most good, to the most people, let us dedicate ourselves to declaring ‘Jesus Christ and Him crucified.’

Our Glorious Living God,
we rejoice that You have given us this message.
We praise You that as we declare it,
the Holy Spirit will use it
unto the eternal good of many.

Catechism: Westminster Shorter Catechism Question #90

How is the Word to be read and heard, that it may become effectual to salvation?

That the Word may become effectual to salvation, we must attend thereunto with diligence, preparation, and prayer, receive it with faith and love, lay it up in our hearts, and practice it in our lives.

Deuteronomy 6:16 ye shall not tempt the LORD your God, as ye tempted him in Massah. Ye shall diligently keep the commandments of the LORD your God, and his testimonies, and his statutes, which he hath commanded thee, and that thou mayest go in and possess the good land which the LORD sware unto thy fathers. Psalm 119:18 Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law. 1 Peter 2:1-2 Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings. As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby. Psalm 119:11 Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee. 2 Thessalonians 2:10 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. Hebrews 4:2 For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it. James 1:22-25. But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgeteth what manner of man he was. But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and countinueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this mans shall be blessed in his deed.
