One Lord Jesus Christ

One Lord Jesus Christ

Yet for us there is one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we for Him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, through whom are all things, and through whom we live.

I Corinthians 8:6

What was Paul’s primary message?  As he began his letter to the Corinthians, he said, ‘I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified.’  This set the tone for everything that followed.  By the time he had arrived at the eighth chapter of his letter, while dealing with yet another issue which the Corinthians were having, he makes the statement which is our text.  He declares unequivocally that there is, ‘one Lord Jesus Christ.’  He makes this statement in contrast to his previous remark, ‘even if there are so-called gods, whether in heaven or on earth (as there are many gods and many lords).’  His point is really that it does not genuinely matter how many so-called gods that human imagination has fabricated.  In reality, ‘there is one God…and one Lord Jesus Christ.’  So, Paul reiterates the same message as Peter did during his preaching in the days following Pentecost.  This is a non-negotiable for all who embrace Christ as the Gospel freely offers Him.  Therefore, we reiterate that which we have received from those who have gone before us.  We stand upon their shoulders and learn from their example.  Hence, we declare there is ‘one Lord Jesus Christ.’

Our Living and Sovereign God,
we rejoice that You are the One, True God
and that there is one Lord Jesus Christ.
We praise You that we love Him
because He first loved us.
