The Last Enemy

For He must reign till He has put all enemies under His feet. The last enemy that will be destroyed is death.
I Corinthians 15:25-26
Death is the last enemy Christ will destroy. Our text declares it and the rest of Scripture shows how He does. When sin entered the world by Adam, the first man, death came with it. Thus, ‘the soul that sins, it shall die.’ Christ came to bring life. He said, ‘I have come that they might have life and that they might have it more abundantly.’ In the context of John 10, He is speaking of His sheep. Later in that same passage, He says, ‘My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand.’ In a de facto way, He is signifying the destruction of death. Revelation speaks of the Last Judgment and says, ‘Then Death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.’ Christ destroys death, the last enemy. We rejoice in His coming victory. This enables us to lift our eyes above the current situation to take the long view. This encourages us so we are less liable to the depression and anxiety that comes from fixating on the current state of our world. Christ is victorious and His victory shall become more clearly manifested as time goes by. He shall defeat all His enemies. The last enemy that will be destroyed is death.
Our Glorious King and our coming Lord,
we rejoice that the future is all Yours.
We praise You that in due course of time,
You shall destroy all Your enemies.
