The Sacrifice of the Lamb
The Sacrifice of the Lamb
And Samuel took a suckling lamb and offered it as a whole burnt offering to the Lord. Then Samuel cried out to the Lord for Israel, and the Lord answered him.
I Samuel 7:9
Our lives have moments of crisis. They may be personal, corporate, national or some combination of that. In the context of our text for today, the nation of Israel was in a national crisis. If we understand the manner in which the Old Testament presents Christ, we see Him in this passage as the Sacrificial Lamb. In a de facto way, when there was a serious threat before the nation, Samuel pointed them first to Christ. Here is the answer for all our crisis moments, be they personal, familial, corporate, or national. Before we do anything else, even pray, as we see in our text, we must look to Christ. Mere morality, or force of will, or prescribed attitudes or behavior, will not take the place of a clear sight of Christ. Without that clear sight of Christ, we are left to our own devices, which will inevitably fall short. It is inevitable that crisis moments will come. If we are to face them with equanimity, calm, confidence and faith, we must approach them with Christ clearly before us. We can then take the steps along the path that He will lead us, knowing that He will not fail us at any point in that path. For the saints of God in any circumstance, Christ is the answer.
Our most Holy and Wise God,
we praise You, that You evermore bring us to Christ.
We rejoice that we see Him, the Altogether Lovely One,
sacrificed for us, and that You are satisfied with Him.
