The Wells Of Salvation

The Wells Of Salvation

Therefore with joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation.

Isaiah 12:3

God is ever conscious of the most basic needs of His people. In the area of the world from which the Scripture derives, water is critically important. In many respects, water means life. Therefore, the connection between water and spiritual life arises very easily. Christ made use of this imagery in John 4 during His conversation with the woman at the well, ‘if you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, Give Me a drink, you would have asked Him , and He would have given you living water.’ Thus, when Isaiah uses the imagery of drawing water out of the wells of salvation and applies it to spiritual prosperity, it is entirely understandable. Isaiah has prepared the way for this text by speaking of Christ throughout the previous chapter. He has referred to Him as the Branch, and the Root of Jesse. He has spoken of all Christ would do, and how the Gentiles would seek Him. He has included the blessing which the children of Israel would receive by the coming of Christ. He then says, ‘Behold, God is my salvation, I will trust and not be afraid; For YAH, the LORD, is my strength and song; He also has become my salvation.’  Christ is God’s salvation. He is the One Who enables us to draw water with joy out of the wells of salvation. By Christ we have the living water that sustains us spiritually in the driest times. As He gave water to the woman at the well, so He gives to us.

Our Great and Gracious God,
we rejoice that You give abundantly to us.
We praise You that we can come to the wells of salvation,
and they never run dry.
