“Look, I go forward, but He is not there, And backward, but I cannot perceive Him; When He works on the left hand, I cannot behold Him; When He turns to the right hand, I cannot see Him. But He knows the way that I take; When He has tested me, I shall come forth as gold. My foot has held fast to His steps; I have kept His way and not turned aside. I have not departed from the commandment of His lips; I have treasured the words of His mouth More than my necessary food. “But He is unique, and who can make Him change? And whatever His soul desires, that He does. For He performs what is appointed for me, And many such things are with Him. Therefore I am terrified at His presence; When I consider this, I am afraid of Him. For God made my heart weak, And the Almighty terrifies me; Because I was not cut off from the presence of darkness, And He did not hide deep darkness from my face.
For He performs what is appointed for me, And many such things are with Him.
Job 23:14

For He performs what is appointed for me, and many such things are with Him.
Job 23:14
We have been dwelling for the last few days upon the Sovereignty of God as it affects us personally. Job declares, ‘For He performs what is appointed for me, and many such things are with Him.’ We want today, to take the opportunity to contemplate just the last few words of our text, ‘and many such things are with Him.’ Here, Job expands his thinking well beyond his own personal circumstance. He has come to accept that, as hard as his own immediate situation may be, God is Sovereignly acting according to His Own Providential Plan, as it affects Job individually. Now, he expands his thinking to include, not just this situation, but also all situations in his life. Is there not also room for us to consider not just Job, but all of his family, all of his friends, all of his nation, all nations in the course of human history, in all climates, and in every generation. Yes, many such things are with Him. So also, we see Christ acting to ‘perform what is appointed for us and many such things are with Him.’ He has from eternity performed all that was necessary to bring us to God. He has, in time, done all that was required to effect our redemption. He is yet doing all that is appointed by the sanctification of us by the Holy Spirit to conform us to His Image. This is not something of which we are the sole beneficiaries, but He is doing it for all of His Elect over the whole course of human history. We rejoice greatly today that no matter what our current situation is, Christ is, for us, and for others, ‘performing what is appointed for us, and many such things are with Him.’
Our most Holy, Wise and Almighty God,
We rejoice that You have foreordained whatsoever has come to pass;
that You are doing good unto Your people,
and shall accomplish Your Providential Plan for us, in every detail.

For He performs what is appointed for me….
Job 23:14
We have come to consider the Sovereignty of God. Job thought upon this subject deeply and in the midst of great personal trial. Having lost possessions, livelihood, health, family, status and reputation, he arrived, in the face of that loss, at the conclusion that God was performing the thing that was appointed for him. Job’s theology was not merely academic or theoretical. Let us dwell for a few moments upon his practical application of his theology of the Sovereignty of God. He said, ‘For He performs what is appointed for me, And many such things are with Him.’ Notice, please, ‘what is appointed for me.’ The works of God’s providence whereby He executes His Sovereign Decrees are not merely general, but personal. In the matter of redemption, Christ carried out the Will of His Father for the specific people whom God the Father had given Him. In every circumstance where we observe Christ dealing with humanity, we see Him performing specific things which were ‘appointed’ for those people. In our own experience we have encountered situation after situation where we have come to understand that God is doing in us, for us, and to us, those things which are appointed for us. Nothing has been coincidence. ‘And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.’ The Great Conductor has not dropped the baton. The Sovereign Ruler has not let the Scepter slip through His Fingers. He takes interest in you personally. ‘He performs the thing that is appointed’ for you. In this there is great security for us, regardless of our circumstances.
Our most Holy, Wise and Sovereign King,
we rejoice that You perform all things after the counsel of Your Own Will,
and never fail to accomplish all that You have appointed for us.
