‘The Sin Of The World’

‘The Sin Of The World’

The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.

John 1:29

When we speak of Christ, ‘the Lamb of God, Who takes away the sin of the world,’ what do we mean when we speak of ‘sin?’  What is sin?  A good definition is, ‘Sin is any want of conformity unto or transgression of the law of God.’  This is what Christ came to address by His life and death.  Sin is what has brought us death.  When Christ came into the world, He came that we ‘might have life and…might have it more abundantly.’  He could not make that a reality without dealing with sin.  To this end, He lived perfectly to deal with sin as it respects the precepts of the law.  He then died sacrificially to deal with sin as it respects the penalty which the law requires.  This sin is the very thing of which we cannot free ourselves.  It is that sinfulness, which is ours by nature and by choice, that Christ addressed.  When we come to understand sin, the nature of it, and the effect of it, we come very quickly to recognize the virtue and value of the Person and Work of Christ.  This makes our view of Him as, ‘The Lamb of God’ even more delightful.  We behold Him as the Altogether Lovely One, Whose value is only exceeded by His virtue.  It is for this reason that we cannot make too much of Christ.  It is for this reason that all theology and doctrine, rightly understood brings us to, ‘Behold, the Lamb of God, Who takes away the sin of the world.’

Our Gracious sin-bearing Savior,
we rejoice in Your perfect life and atoning death.
We praise You that by them,

You have satisfied the law of God in every way
on our behalf.

A Message For Believers

A Message For Believers

The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.

John 1:29

‘Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.’  According to Hebrews, ‘…without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.’  Faith is also a gift of God according to Ephesians 2.  When God gives us faith, to what end does He give it?  John tells us, ‘…these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.’ Faith in God means faith in Christ.  ‘Neither is there salvation in any other, for there is none other name under heaven, given among men, whereby we must be saved.’  Therefore, when we hear the clarion call of John the Baptist, ‘Behold, the Lamb of God, Who takes away the sin of the world,’ we take that very personally.  We believe in Christ, His perfect life and His atoning death.  We believe that He has satisfied the law of God in precept by His life and in penalty by His death.  We believe His testimony, ‘I am the way, the truth, and the life.  No man comes to the Father, but by me.’  We have placed all our hope in Him, for forgiveness of sin, for acceptance with God, for justification, adoption, sanctification, and glorification.  We hold Him to be the only Redeemer of God’s Elect.  Therefore we not only receive John’s message, but we also repeat John’s message.  We are the spiritual inheritors of the Great Commission to go into all the world and preach the Gospel.  Popular or unpopular, accepted or rejected, praised or pilloried, living or dying, we say with John the Baptist and all the redeemed of all the ages, ‘Behold the Lamb of God, Who takes away the sin of the world.’

Our Glorious Living Christ,
we rejoice that You have given us every reason to believe in You.
We praise You that we have the great privilege,

to proclaim all that You have done for us
and will do for others, who place their faith in You.

A Message For The Ages

A Message For The Ages

The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.

John 1:29

John the Baptist was an utterly unique individual.  From the angelic announcement of his birth, to his bizarre attire, to his rough-hewn message and ministry, he captivates our attention.  When he beheld Christ ‘coming toward him,’ he spoke clearly and unmistakably about the Person and Work of Christ.  He said, ‘Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.’  This is a message for the ages.  It spans the whole of the Old and New Testaments.  The first acceptable sacrifice, made by Abel to God, was the sacrifice of a lamb.  Later, Abraham testified, and in his testimony prophesied, ‘The Lord shall provide Himself a lamb.’  When God set the annual calendar for the nation of Israel, He began their year with the sacrifice of the lamb.  Central to the worship of the Tabernacle and the Temple was the sacrifice of the lamb.  John’s message of ‘Behold the Lamb of God would continue on throughout the New Testament.  The once-for-all sacrifice of Christ came at the time of the Passover.  Paul reiterated the message with ‘Christ, our Passover is sacrificed for us.’  John saw Christ in Revelation as the ‘Lamb as though it had been slain.’  When he came to the end of his work, he again showed us in the New Jerusalem, ‘the throne of God and of the Lamb.’  This is the message for the ages.  This is the Message which surpasses all others.  ‘Behold, the Lamb of God.’

Our Wise and Holy God,
we rejoice that You have set forth

the message of Christ, throughout history.
We praise You that we may look backward
and forward and find Christ all along the way.

Scripture: John 1:19-36

And this is the record of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who art thou? And he confessed, and denied not; but confessed, I am not the Christ. And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elias? And he saith, I am not. Art thou that prophet? And he answered, No. Then said they unto him, Who art thou! that we may give an answer to them that sent us. What sayest thou of thyself? He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Esaias. And they which were sent were of the Pharisees. And they asked him, and said unto him, Why baptizest thou then, if thou be not that Christ, nor Elias, neither that prophet? John answered them, saying, I baptize with water: but there standeth one among you, whom ye know not; He it is, who coming after me is preferred before me, whose shoe’s latches I am not worthy to unloose. These things were done in Bethabara beyond Jordan, where John was baptizing. The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world. This is he of whom I said, After me cometh a man which is preferred before me: for he was before me. And I knew him not: but htat he should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water. And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him. And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost. And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God. Again the next day after John stood, and two of his disciples; And looking upon Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of God!

Catechism: Westminster Shorter Catechism Question #51

What is forbidden in the second commandment?

The second commandment forbiddeth the worshiping of God by images, or any other way not appointed in his Word.

Deuteronomy 4:15-19 Take ye therefore good heed unto yourselves; for ye saw no manner of similitude on the day that the Lord spake unto you in Horeb out of the midst of the fire: Lest ye corrupt yourselves, and make you a graven image, the similitude of any figure, the likeness of make or female, the likeness of any beast that is on the earth, the likeness of any winged fowl that filieth in the air, the Likeness of any thing that creepeth on the ground, the likeness of any fish that is in the waters beneath the earth: And lest thou lift up thine eyes unto heaven, and when thou seest the sun, and the moon, and the stars, even all the host of heaven, shouldest be driven to worship them, and serve them, which the Lord thy God hath divided unto all nations under the whole heaven. Romans 1:22-23 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, and changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and four footed beasts, and creeping things.

Scripture:  John 1:14-18

And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.  John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake, He that comes after me is preferred before me:  for he was before me.  And of his fullness have all we received, and grace for grace.  For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.  No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.

Sermon:  Take Heart – Daniel Lowe

  1. Take heart Christ is the eternal living Word of God.
  2. Take heart Christ is the incarnate Son of God.
  3. Take heart Christ is full of grace and truth.

Catechism:  Westminster Shorter Catechism Question #40

What did God at first reveal to man for the rule of his obedience?

The rule which God at first revealed to man for his obedience, was the moral law.

Romans 2:14-15 For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves:  Which show the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one anther.
Romans 10:5 For Moses describes the righteousness which is of the law, that the man which does those things shall live by them.
