Talking About Jesus

Talking About Jesus

Talking About Jesus

And this report about Him went throughout all Judea and all the surrounding region.

Luke 7:17

Christ does things that cause people to talk about Him. We have considered, over the past few days how Christ halted the procession of death; spoke life to the dead; and, brought glory to God. The cumulative effect of these actions caused people to talk about Him. This is significant for us to consider. The message of the Bible is redemption, which is inseparable from the Person and Work of Christ. If we are going to speak from the Bible at all, we must, of necessity make much of Christ, lest we reduce it to a code of morality. It then becomes a religious code book which produces in its followers that which has the form of godliness but denies the power. The miracles of Christ were to the purpose that people might look to Him. John recorded the accounts of the ministry and miracles of Christ with this stated purpose, ‘but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.’ This is as relevant to us today as it was in those days. Once we have seen and believe the miracles which Christ has done, and are convinced of Who He is, we will consistently speak of Him. He will become the theme of our conversation. All other conversations will take on a lower priority to us once we have seen the Wonder-Working Christ. Let us gaze upon Him, observe His Wonderful Works, and go and tell what we have seen and heard.

Our Glorious, Living Christ,
we rejoice that we may make You the Grand Subject
of our most worthwhile conversations.
We praise You that all eternity will not be long enough for us
to expound on all Your Wondrous Works.

‘And They Glorified God’

‘And They Glorified God’

‘And They Glorified God’

Then fear came upon all, and they glorified God, saying, “A great prophet has risen up among us;” and, “God has visited His people.”

Luke 7:16

If ‘man’s chief end is to glorify God,’ then Christ did that to the highest degree. Salvation, in its’ entirety, glorifies God. Christ came, lived, died, and rose again to accomplish redemption. Therefore, everything which Christ did at every stage of His Incarnation, He did to glorify God. The scene before us entirely supports that line of thought. Christ halted the procession of death. He spoke life to the dead. The result of that was that the young man arose from the dead, and Christ ‘presented him to his mother.’ Our text for today describes the reaction of the people who witnessed the miracle. ‘Then fear came upon all, and they glorified God, saying, “A great prophet has risen up among us,” and, “God has visited His people.”’ They ‘feared,’ or had reverence, respect, and regard for God. Beyond that, they ‘glorified’ God. Their conclusion was, ‘A great prophet has risen up among us,’ and ‘God has visited His people.’ All this to say, that by this miracle Christ was accomplishing everything which He intended in terms of bringing glory to God. For our own edification, let us consider that every grand work which Christ does in our own life is to the same purpose, that we might revere God and glorify Him. As we dwell upon the works of Christ, Who, in spiritual terms has halted our procession of death, and spoken life to us in our deadness, let us, as the result of those contemplations, revere and glorify God, Who does all things well.

Our Glorious Wonder-Working God,
we praise You that You do all things well.
We rejoice that we have the high privilege of revering You
and glorifying You for all Your Wondrous Works.

Speaking Life to the Dead

Speaking Life to the Dead

Speaking Life to the Dead

Then He came and touched the open coffin, and those who carried him stood still. And He said, “Young man, I say to you, arise.” So he who was dead sat up and began to speak. And He presented him to his mother.

Luke 7:14-15

Christ speaks life to the dead. As we continue our consideration of this notable miracle, we come today to dwell upon the actual transformation which Christ effected, which brought life to the dead man. In our experience as humans, nothing is so permanent and irreversible as death. Once death has well and truly taken hold, there is no coming back. We have only what we can do to pay our respect and to honor the memory of the departed. Christ halted the procession of death, but then He did above what the family could ask or think. We find in our text, ‘Then He came and touched the open coffin, and those who carried him stood still. And He said, “Young man, I say to you, arise.” So he who was dead sat up and began to speak. And He presented him to his mother.’ Christ spoke life to the dead. It is even so with us. We are born ‘dead in trespasses.’ All our life is but an ongoing procession of death. God said to Adam and Eve, ‘dying, you shall die,’ and that summarizes the physical and spiritual history of the human race. By the power of His Holy Spirit, Christ speaks life to us in the midst of our deadness. He grants unto us regeneration. He gives life in exchange for the death which has reigned. Our hope lies utterly in this life-giving Christ. We look not to man, in his philosophy, morality, or religion to give us what can come from God Alone. Today, let us rejoice in this all-powerful Christ, Who speaks life to the dead.

Our Glorious, Living Christ,
we rejoice that You speak life to the dead.
We praise You, that because of You,
we shall live and that forever.

Halting the Procession of Death

Halting the Procession of Death

Halting the Procession of Death

Then He came and touched the open coffin, and those who carried him stood still. And He said, “Young man, I say to you, arise.”

Luke 7:14

Christ halts the procession of death. In the account before us, Christ was walking, with His disciples, and a large crowd of followers into the city of Nain. As He did, He encountered a funeral procession coming out of the city to bury a young man who was, ‘the only son of his mother, and she was a widow.’ There was also ‘a large crowd…with her.’ As these two large crowds came together, Christ halted the procession. As our text remarks, ‘and those who carried him stood still.’ The actions of Christ, especially those which involved His miracles, were never mere raw demonstrations of power. They were to the purpose of showing Him to be the Savior. For this reason, even the manner in which He approached these wonderful works is significant. The portion on which we are concentrating today shows us that He halted the procession of death. So Christ does with us. ‘We are born the children of wrath.’ We are ‘dead in trespasses.’ All our life is but a procession of death towards a final conclusion. Christ halts that procession in spiritual terms because He intends to do something miraculous. We marvel, not just at the whole of Christ’s work, but at each separate portion of it. Today let us dwell upon the work of Christ in our own life, to halt our spiritual procession of death that He might bring us life.

O, Lord of life,
we rejoice in Your Life-Giving Power.
We praise You, that You stop us on our downward path of destruction
and deliver us from the jaws of death.

Scripture:  Luke 7:11-17

Now it happened, the day after, that He went into a city called Nain; and many of His disciples went with Him, and a large crowd. And when He came near the gate of the city, behold, a dead man was being carried out, the only son of his mother; and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the city was with her. When the Lord saw her, He had compassion on her and said to her, “Do not weep.” Then He came and touched the open coffin, and those who carried him stood still. And He said, “Young man, I say to you, arise.” So he who was dead sat up and began to speak. And He presented him to his mother.  Then fear came upon all, and they glorified God, saying, “A great prophet has risen up among us”; and, “God has visited His people.” And this report about Him went throughout all Judea and all the surrounding region.

Catechism:  Westminster Shorter Catechism Question #15

What was the sin whereby our first parents fell from the estate wherein they were created?

The sin whereby our first parents fell from the estate wherein they were created, was their eating the forbidden fruit.

1 Genesis 3:6. And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.
