Great Faith

Great Faith

While He spoke these things to them, behold, a ruler came and worshiped Him, saying, My daughter has just died, but come and lay Your hand on her and she will live.

Matthew 9:18

Great faith, at times, flies in the face of logic. Our text reflects this. The ruler, whose name was Jairus, appealed to Jesus to come to his house saying, ‘My daughter has just died, but come and lay your hand on her and she will live.’ The other two evangelists phrase it in such a way as to indicate she was ‘dying’ or ‘at the point of death.’ Matthew puts it that she had just died. Here was a desperate father who believed in the power of Christ. He appealed to Him with great faith, which, if we take Matthew’s statement at face value, flew in the face of logic. As we look at this incident, we will observe others who pointed this out to him. This man would allow no one to deter him. He had great faith in Christ in spite of the circumstances. We may find ourselves where he was. We may encounter situations in our life which draw us to Christ as being the only One Who can do us good. We may be asking for Him to act on our behalf in the face of human logic. Christ is greater than our logic and our circumstances. He recognizes and rewards great faith.

Our Wonder-working Savior,
we rejoice that You are the Lord of every circumstance.
We praise You that You will do
what brings You glory.

A Reasonable Faith

A Reasonable Faith

For she said within herself, if I may but touch his garment, I shall be whole.

Matthew 9:21

Faith does not always depend upon reason; yet, faith is reasonable. This woman who followed Christ, with the intention of touching His garment to receive healing, was following a line of reasoning which our text articulates. The other two evangelists who relate this same story refer to her reasoning. She was aware that Christ was doing wonderful things for many people with various maladies. She considered that if for them, why not for her? She had such faith she believed she had only to touch the hem of Christ’s garment in order for the healing to occur. As Christ walked along to go to Jairus’ house, she slipped up behind Him and touched the hem of His garment. She was instantly healed. We also have a reasonable faith. We believe the story of what Christ did for the woman. We believe all the other accounts of His miraculous works in the lives of a host of people with all sorts of issues. If Christ did wonders for them, why not us? He is the same Christ today as He was on that day. It is eminently reasonable to appeal to Him.

Our Great God and our Savior,
we rejoice that You are the Great Physician.
We praise You that we have every reason
to bring our cases to You.

Scripture:  Matthew 6:9-13

After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.  And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

Sermon:  Deliver Us – Tomm Tice

  1.  The evil one is real.
  2. The evil one is active.
  3. Christ is greater than the evil one.

Catechism:  Westminster Shorter Catechism Question # 28

Wherein Consisteth Christ’s exaltation?

Chirst’s exaltation consisteth in his rising again from the dead on the third day, in ascending up into heaven, in sittting at the right hand of God the Father, and in coming to Jude the world at the last day.

1 1 Corinthians 15:4. And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures.
2 Psalm 68:18. Thou hast ascended on high, thou hast led captivity captive: thou hast received gifts for men; yea, for the rebellious also, that the LORD God might dwell among them. Acts 1:11. Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven. Ephesians 4:8. Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men.
3 Psalm 110:1. The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool. Acts 2:33-34. Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear. For David is not ascended into the heavens: but he saith himself, The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, Hebrews 1:3. Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high
4 Matthew 16:27. For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works. Acts 17:31. Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.
