God’s Word Magnified

…For You have magnified Your word above all Your name.

Psalm 138:2

God places great emphasis upon His Word. Psalm 119, the longest chapter in the Bible, sets forth the value of the Word in elaborate detail. Again and again the Word brings us back to itself as that which provides us with the answers to the most perplexing questions of life and of eternity. Our text today follows in the same vein as Psalm 119, ‘…For You have magnified Your word above all Your name.’ God sets His Name in high regard. That He would magnify His Word above all His Name, is an indication of the value He sets upon His Word. Having said that, and without straining the text, is it not fair to say that God has magnified, Christ, His Living Word, as well?  God’s magnification of His Written Word, leads us, inevitably to Christ, the Living Word. ‘To Him give all the prophets witness.’ From the beginning of the Written Word to its’ glorious conclusion, Christ is the Message. He is the Seed of the Woman in Genesis 3. He is the Provided Lamb of Genesis 22. He is the Captain of the Lord’s Hosts in Joshua 5. He is Messenger of Jehovah; the Lion of the Tribe of Judah; Wonderful, Counselor, the Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace. He is the Lamb of God, Who takes away, the sin of the world. He is ‘the Christ, the Son of the Living God.’ He is the Alpha and Omega; the Beginning and the End; the First and the Last; the Root and the Offspring of David; the Bright and Morning Star. This is the Word which God has magnified. Yes, He has magnified His Word, above all His Name.

Great God of Wonders, We praise You for Your Word,
both Written and Living,
We rejoice that in them,
we find treasure ‘as one that finds great spoil.’
