‘As The Mountains’

As the mountains surround Jerusalem, So the Lord surrounds His people From this time forth and forever.

Psalm 125:2

One of the blessings and benefits of our adoption into the Family of God is His defense of us. Our text for today, lies within the context of the Old Testament, so, within the strictest of contexts applies to the ancient people of Israel.  Given the tenor of the New Testament and the behavior of Christ, we would err greatly in refusing to apply it to all the people of God. The Head defends the Body. The Bridegroom defends the Bride. Even on the night before Christ went to the cross, as the mob was about to arrest Him in the Garden of Gethsemane. He said, ‘If you are looking for Me, allow these people to go their way;’ thus He secured the liberty of His Own. So, God is ever the Great Defender of His adopted children. Our text uses the picture of ‘the mountains…round about Jerusalem.’ These form a natural defense for the City of God. So God encompasses His children to defend them from all their foes. This provides an abundant security for us. Christ said, of His people, ‘neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.’ He added, ‘no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand.’ This is the security which we need today, and every day. It is a blessing and benefit of our adoption. Our God is to us, ‘like the mountains…round about Jerusalem.’

‘We rest on Thee our Shield and Defender.’
We rejoice that You are, in every way, the Guardian of Your people.
We are safe in Christ, and that forever.

Our Forever Reigning Christ

The Lord shall reign forever— Your God, O Zion, to all generations.

Psalm 146:10

We are coming to the conclusion of our meditations upon the various texts of Psalm 146.  As we have dwelt upon these truths, we have considered them in their most Christological presentation.  Today, we consider the final bold proclamation, ‘The Lord shall reign forever.’  Here is a great encouragement for all the ransomed church of God.  We live in a day when, ‘the wicked walk on every side, and the vilest men are exalted.’   Dictators, oppressors, and fiends hold some of the highest positions and the most elevated posts.  They seem to excercise their capricious will over those more righteous than they.  Our text today shows us Who truly Rules and shall continue to Rule.  ‘The Lord shall reign forever— Your God, O Zion, to all generations.’  To put this in its’ most Christological form, ‘Christ shall reign forever.’  When all of these petty tyrants fail; when their condemnation and judgment is complete; when the Hand of Omnipotent Justice has swept them away to their final perdition, Christ shall still be on the Throne of Heaven, and He ‘shall reign forever.’  Judgment shall proceed and justice shall prevail.  ‘Jesus shall reign where’er the sun doth its’ successive journeys run.  His kingdom spread from shore to shore, till moon shall wax and wane no more.’

Our Glorious Reigning Christ,
we rejoice that You shall forever rule,
and that before You, every knee shall bow
and every tongue confess, that You are Lord indeed.
