I Am My Beloved’s

I am my beloved’s, And his desire is toward me.

Song of Solomon 7:10

It is not enough for us to love, we want also to be loved, hopefully, with overwhelming intensity. The Song of Solomon is a love story. It is the most passionate and intense love story of all time and of all eternity. Christ, the Kindly Bridegroom, seeks and wins His Beloved Bride, the Church. After the nuptials, towards the end of the book, there is a highly detailed description of the Beautiful Bride. At the close of the description, the Bride utters these words, they are the words of a well-loved woman. She says, ‘I am my Beloved’s and His desire is toward me.’ The Bride begins with her declaration of her abundant security. She says, ‘I am my Beloved’s.’

When another loves us, there is great security. Circumstances may change, challenges may come, hardships may rise, but we may meet all of them because we are secure in the position we have in Christ. There is no pride, but fervent devoted reverence in this statement. The Bride is not just secure in her position, she is also overjoyed. Christ is the fulfillment of all our hopes and all our dreams. He exceeds our every expectation, in every way. But the Bride does not cease her tribute here. Rather, she follows her initial remark with ‘and His desire is toward me.’ Everyone wants to be wanted. A woman might be secure in her position, yet remain undesired. Not so with the Church of Jesus Christ. With as much confidence as she had demonstrated in her first statement, the Bride affirms her experience of the Passion of Christ toward her. Christ loves us with the burning passion that brought Him from the glory of God’s eternal day to the wretchedness of earth’s midnight. His passion for us carried Him through His perfect life and through his agony of death. His passionate desire for us has brought Him to prepare our dwelling, and promise His return. His passion for us has brought Him to guarantee that where He is, there we will be also, and that forever rejoice in today, Saint of God. Your position in Christ is utterly secure. His desire for you is boundless. You are Your Beloved’s and His desire is toward you.

Our most Gracious and Loving Savior,
We praise You that we are utterly secure,
And that You passionately desire us.
