Upheld By His Right Hand

Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.’

Isaiah 41:10

How often do the events of life demonstrate to us our weakness!  A set of tiny, unseen microbes enters us and we are violently ill.  A single harsh sentence from an acquaintance sends us into a tail spin of despondency.  We are so often tottering, if not outwardly, then inwardly.  We need strong support or we will go down and be unable to rise.  Graciously, God guarantees to uphold us.  He makes this type of promise in many places; however, this one in Isaiah 41:10 commands our attention for the moment.  There are in this text assurances piled upon assurances, but we will address the last one only, “Yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of My righteousness.”  By this statement God reminds us of our grave necessity, that of being upheld.  We are not ready to receive God’s upholding until we are well acquainted with the reality of our weaknesses.  The necessity highlights our weakness, requires our humbleness, and causes us to remember that we are prone to vacillation, trembling, and failure.  The humble soul is the candidate for Divine help.

It may be that even in the events of the last few days or hours that you have come to the truth about your own weakness.  You thought you were strong; yet you now know your inability.  God here refers to the means whereby He will uphold us.  He will use “the right hand of His righteousness.”  This is the hand of power, the hand of honor, the hand of privilege, the hand of compassion, the hand of imputed righteousness which upholds us before the Throne of Heaven and the hand of imparted righteousness which upholds us among the sons of men.  There is no question that He will so hold us up, because He has stamped His promise with the great seal of His sovereign “I will.”  Look away from your weakness unto His strength.  Lean upon your Beloved.  Lie down upon the everlasting arms.  Know we are upheld by the right hand of His righteousness.

Our Lord and Our God,
we rest on Thee for support today.
We dare not take one step without Thee.
Uphold us, we pray.
