Christ’s Enduring Love for His Own

Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that His hour had come that He should depart from this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end.

John 13:1

How evident is our love for our dear ones when the hour of parting arrives.  Who of us has not felt the tightening chest and the welling up of the tears when the time comes to bid farewell to those we love the best.  We see in our text that that hour had come for Christ.  All that follows in the next chapters will show the depths of His love for His own.  The Beloved Disciple, writing under inspiration, beautifully depicts the events to come with the words, “He loved them unto the end.”

For us as well, there is this holy comfort.  ‘God commendeth His love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners Christ died for us.’  Christ bears for His people an unfailing, unchanging love. The fact of this love is amazing all by itself.  It is a sovereign love originating from the central depths of our omnipotent God.  It is a spiritual love that is as holy and pure in its character as the character of Him from whom it originates.  It is a sacrificial love in that it has prompted God to make His only Son an offering for sin.  This is especially astounding when we consider the unworthiness of the objects of His love.  He loved ‘them’, He loves us, in spite of complete sinfulness, slowness, selfishness, and spinelessness.  In spite of our character, He loves us.

There is also the remarkable character of Christ’s love, in that it is ‘unto the end.’  As this love was from everlasting; so it is to everlasting, an ever-constant, ever-tender love.  It is a love that extends to the end of our extremities, to the end of our earthly journey, to the end of time.  “What wondrous love is this, O my soul!”

Today let us bask in the sunlight of Christ’s never-changing, never-fading, never-dying love for the poor, wretched creatures that we are.  He has promised to love His children until the end. Amazing love!

O Christ,

In Thee our souls are blessed

by this never-failing love

of Thine for us!
