Feeding Many With Righteous Lips

The lips of the righteous feed many……

Proverbs 10:21a

“For the ear tasteth words, as the mouth tasteth meat.”  So spoke Elihu, the wisest friend of Job in the book of Job.  Elihu would have well understood the importance of today’s text:  “The lips of the righteous feed many.”  Because the lips of the righteous person are filled with the Word of God, they provide spiritual food for many people.  Offering a continual banquet of words that point another soul to Christ, can do nothing but nourish a famished soul.  As we have observed over the past several days, there is a clear way to identify “the righteous.”  That person whose righteousness is that perfect legal conformity to the unswerving law of the thrice-holy God is the only one who can bear the title “righteous.”  No one possesses such a righteousness apart from the imputed righteousness of Christ, the result of justifying grace.   The Scripture makes clear that there are those who do possess that righteousness, having received it by faith in the Person of Christ, and in the efficacy of His work for them.   It is the contents of the lips of these justified folks that “feed many.”

How often has God already made use of some “word fitly spoken” in your life?  Someone whom you know to be a godly person has spoken a word “in due season,” which has fed our own soul upon “a feast of fat things.”  By the spiritual use of the Word of God that person has communicated to you exactly the message the Lord has intended for the nourishment of your soul.  Think then of the “many” whom such folk “feed.”  Everywhere throughout the world they go, they impart a word that points another clearly to Christ, which those who receive repeat, and so the benefit expands, even to generations that follow.  Many are fed, many see Christ and grow in their knowledge of Him.  Whom have you fed today so far?  Whom will you feed before the day is gone?  Whom will you point to Christ?  “The lips of the righteous feed many.”
