Fresh Oil

But my horn You have exalted like a wild ox; I have been anointed with fresh oil.

Psalm 92:10

No spiritual work ever occurs without the Holy Spirit’s involvement.  Whereas the Old Testament was the “day” of the Father’s prominence; the Gospels, the “day” of Christ’s prominence; and the post-Pentecost era the “day” of the Holy Spirit’s prominence; yet each member of the Trinity has operated in every era along with the other Two.  We rather arbitrarily and wrongfully tend to limit the operations of certain Members of the Trinity depending upon what period of time we are discussing.  The Psalmist in writing this “Psalm for the Sabbath Day” sets forth the work of the Holy Spirit under a common Scriptural type or figure; that of “fresh oil.”  Here is a very evangelical message for the hearts of all of us who are the Lord’s.  To be anointed with the “fresh oil” of the Holy Spirit is our need, our desire, and our confidence.  We need the “fresh oil” of the filling of the Holy Spirit because without that our work for God and our worship of God will all be in vain.  Christ said to His disciples in John 15:5, “for without me ye can do nothing.”  When He would have His disciples to do something “He bid them wait until the Holy Spirit” had filled them at Pentecost.  We need that filling as well.  It is our holy necessity.  As those who are in Christ, the filling of the Holy Spirit is also our holy desire.  What reason do we have to aspire to anything less?  Why should we desire to merely “go through the the motions” of spirituality if there is to be no real vitality?  How brightly does this desire for the Spirit’s filling burn within you today?  The Psalmist also had a holy confidence that God would grant him his desire.  He declares with strength, “I shall be anointed with fresh oil.”  God will be as good as His Word.  He will “give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him.”  With confidence let us ask that He will today anoint us with “fresh oil.”
