Our Unseen Majority

So he answered, “Do not fear, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.”

2 Kings 6:16

How much more do we see with the eyes of faith!  The army of Syria’s King had come to put a stop to the intelligence passed from God, to Elisha, to the King of Israel.  The young man who was Elisha’s servant was, quite understandably, alarmed.  The words from Elisha must have puzzled him initially, for as yet he could not see what the prophet had already observed.  This word of encouragement ought to uplift us who have the distinct advantage of history over Elisha’s servant.  As long as the Lord is for us, we are in the majority, regardless of how circumstances appear.  We can easily see the foes who are against us.  As the Psalmist points out in Psalm 25:19, “they are many; and they hate me with cruel hatred.”  Like the servant of old we are keenly aware of the fears which are within us.  We fear because we summarize the circumstances based upon what we can physically see, not upon what the eyes of faith should observe.  Therefore we are, like the servant, often in a genuine panic.

The faith like Elisha’s is what we want.  It is not that which sees, and therefore believes; rather, it is that which believes, and therefore sees.  It is a faith which comforts that one who possesses it and gives the possessor grace to pray for those who do not yet have it.  This is the faith that will uphold us.  With such a faith we shall see the forces which will defend us.  They are the ministers and messengers of Our Almighty God.  They are the instruments of God for our defense and for the defeat of our enemies.  What a notable victory did God give to Elisha on this occasion!  What a broad opportunity to teach the King of Syria, his army, and the King of Israel of the power of the God of Elisha.

This God is our God as well. Christ is the Great Captain of the Lord’s Host. He is ever the Steadfast Lover, and Stalwart Defender of His Church. How can we be fearful with such a Champion on our side?  Go forth today without cringing fear of circumstances wherein you seem to be in the distinct minority.  With God you hold the majority position, regardless of how it seems.

Great God of Hosts,

enable us to go forward

with the faith like Elisha had.
