Our Wait of Servanthood

Behold, as the eyes of servants look to the hand of their masters, as the eyes of a maid to the hand of her mistress, so our eyes look to the Lord our God, until He has mercy on us.

Psalm 123:2

As saved folk, we enjoy a relationship with God which has many facets to it.  We all enjoy the aspect of our relationship which exists by virtue of the fact that He is Our Creator, and that we are His creation.  We can also claim the Redeemer-redeemed, Father-child, King-subject, and Friend-friend relationship.  There is also the Master-servant facet of our relationship.  This is the one which our text sets forth today.  Because God is Our Master, we wait for Him as others wait for their earthly masters.  Ours is a watchful wait.  We look unto the face of our Lord Jesus Christ as He reveals Himself to us in the Scriptures.  We look for the smile of His approval or the frown of His displeasure.  We look for a glimpse of Him on every page.  Have you seen the face of Christ today?

Ours is also an expectant wait.  We look unto His “hand,” as our text reminds us.  From His hand we may rightly expect to receive provision.  We may expect to receive direction by His pointing us on one course or another.  We may also expect to receive correction.  The hand that provides and directs is also the hand that holds the rod of chastening.

Ours is also a submissive wait.  The Master-servant aspect of our relationship means that we must be constantly prepared to obey the revealed will of Our Lord.  His desire is our directive.   Like Livingstone, our cry must be “Lord, send me anywhere. . . .” Oh, that every one of us would know personally that true submissiveness.

Ours is also a worthwhile wait.  We are waiting in faith for the God who will “have mercy upon us.”  These thoughts are especially encouraging when we, like those in the Psalm, feel despised and held in the contempt of others who are “proud” and “at ease.”  Do not fear to wait!  Your God will come!

Our Gracious Master, 

we wait for Thee.

Show Thyself in mercy.

Deliver us from all our foes.
