Steps That Are Ordered

The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, And He delights in his way.

Psalm 37:23

It is good for us to know where we are going.  If we do not know for ourselves, then it is comforting to have a guide upon whom we can rely who does know the way.  David knew such a Guide for himself.  We who are in Christ have that same Guide for our journey.  God takes delight in ordering and arranging the progress of His redeemed people.

Let us consider the people for whom God makes these arrangements.  They appear under the generic title of ‘a good man.’  When we speak of someone as ‘a good man,’ we can only see it in a relative sense.  When the rich young ruler came to Christ calling him ‘good Master,’ Christ replied that there was ‘none good but God.’  If anyone can bear the title of good, then that person must possess a perfect righteousness.  Souls justified by free grace, by the shed blood of Christ, have that perfect righteousness by imputation.  These are the people who bear the title ‘good’ in the text.

What then of the path of these ‘good’ people?  All of us are traveling upon some road.  Either we are traversing the ‘broad way’ which leads to destruction or we are following the ‘narrow way’ which leads to eternal life.  He knows exactly what He is doing.  We can therefore take great comfort that He is ordering all our steps.  Rejoice in that today.

Our Father, God and Guide,

we rejoice in Thy ordering of our steps.

We praise Thee for Thy providence toward us.
