Wise Words from Mary

His mother said to the servants, “Whatever He says to you, do it.

John 2:5

As Christ’s public ministry began, Mary had to learn to adjust to her new role in relation to Him. Whereas in His early days of incarnation Christ had been ‘subject’ to Mary and Joseph, now He was emerging as the Prophet of His people and was under her authority no longer. He reminds her of this in His response to her statement in the third verse of this passage. Having noted that fact, we must also consider that Christ was about to do His inaugural miracle and must have indicated to Mary in some unrecorded manner that He would act to alleviate the difficulty facing the young couple. Mary then said to the servants, ‘Whatsoever He says unto you, do it.’

The contrast between us and the servants is significant as to why we should desire to please Christ by our doing His will. The servants had never seen or heard of Christ before. We have come to know Him as the great Lover of our souls. The servants had not seen Him do any miracles. We have experienced miracle after miracle as He has transformed our lives. The servants were only complying on the strength of the word of Mary. We have received the Word of the Living Christ, ‘Who loved us and gave himself for us.’ He has said, ‘If you love Me, keep my commandments.’

Certainly we ought to render to Christ the type of obedience which Mary describes. That obedience ought to be of the very highest quality. By that I mean that it ought to be whole-hearted, prompt, and spiritually mature. There are excellent reasons why we ought to render that obedience, not the least of which is that, Christ is our Master. As our Master, His proven character is that He is worthy of our obedience, all-wise, and fit to lead. He is as well our only hope for this scene of time and for eternity. Then is added that fact that He has rewarded our obedience in the past and promised to reward it in the future. The results of obeying Christ is that it will strengthen our love for Him and be the practical proof of our professed faith. It also enables us to lead others in their efforts to obey Him, as well as preparing us for the enjoyment of heaven. Our wise response, to these wise words from Mary should be. ‘Lord, what do you want me to do?’

Lord, help us today,

Whatsoever You saith

unto us,

enable us to do it.
