Walking by Faith

….. we walk by faith, not by sight.

2 Corinthians 5:7

Seven words that summarize the life of the Christian serve as our text today.  Seven short words that speak volumes about the difference between the life of the saint and the life of the worldling.  What is this ‘walk’ which we walk?  It is a walk of the ancient saints; like Enoch, who ‘walked with God.’  It is a walk which we walk by the power of the Holy Spirit speaking through the Word of God, saying, ‘This is the way; walk ye in it.’  It is a walk which we need to mind very carefully in order that we may ‘walk worthy of the vocation wherewith we are called.’  It is a walk that is different from that of others who walk, ‘in the vanity of their mind.’  It is a walk that leads to glory.  The gate through which we enter is ‘strait’ and the way is ‘narrow,’ but it leads ‘unto life.’  It is a walk that, follows Christ, looks to Christ, affords fellowship with Christ, and culminates in the Presence of Christ.

There is as well, the faith by which we walk.  That faith is a ‘gift of God,’ which pleases Him.  It is a faith which encompasses the whole of life so much so that we can describe ourselves as those who ‘live by the faith of the Son of God.’

What stands in opposition to our walking by faith?  According to our text, it is ‘sight,’ or walking ‘by sight.’ In other words, what opposes the walk of faith is that which sees the temporal as being more important than the eternal.  In opposition to the walk of faith there is that attitude which sees our own will as being more important than God’s will and the gain of ‘the whole world’ without seeing the impending loss of the soul.  The question we may well ask ourselves today is, ‘To what extent is my life, right now, a walking by faith?’  In what areas of life do I find myself more reliant upon ‘sight’ than faith?  If I am walking to some degree by faith today, how may I walk by faith to a greater degree tomorrow?  May it be always our prayer to ever increasingly ‘walk by faith, not by sight.’

Our Loving Lord,

help us to walk by faith.

Make the unseen things our desire and,

the hope of all that You promise, our foundation.
