Joy After Weeping
Joy After Weeping
.…… Weeping may endure for a night, But joy comes in the morning.
Psalm 30:5b
While there were many nights of weeping in the life of David, he also enjoyed many mornings of joy. Our text today arises out of a Psalm which David wrote at the dedication of his house. Prior to that, especially during his days as a fugitive from the persecution of Saul, he had had no certain dwelling. He had lived in caves and borrowed housing. His life had hung before him on the sure promise of God that he would someday be King of Israel. He had known disappointment and discouragement, been misrepresented and maligned, and wondered at times, if the dawn would ever come. Now, he was the King over all of Israel. God had fulfilled His promises. David now dwelt in the capital city of Jerusalem, and had a house there that he was dedicating. God had ‘brought him forth into the large place.’
Review, Child of God, your own life. You may yet be enduring your nights of weeping. Even now, your Good Shepherd may be walking with you through the ‘Valley of the Shadow of Death.’ The night shades may both disturb and at times, terrify you. Remember the same Christ who Shepherded David through his nights of weeping, also Shepherds you. His Christ, is your Christ. Beyond that, realize that night always gives way to dawn. Though the night seems long and wearisome, yet the sun will inevitably arise. So also will your sun ‘arise with healing in His wings.’ The same Christ who accompanies you through your night of weeping guarantees you a morning of joy. He marks all your tears, and will exchange them for the morning dew of joy and gladness. What He did for David, He will not fail to do for you.
If today you find yourself enjoying the joy of the morning, is there beside you some friend or brother who stands in need of this encouraging word. Are they about to lose hope, and believe that their weeping will never come to an end. Is their darkness overwhelming them? Show them Christ. Show them what He has done for David, and for you. Encourage them with the prospect that weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning.
Gracious Savior, we rejoice that you control
the nights of our weeping and guarantee
the joys of our mornings.
