Eternal Life: Given and Guaranteed

And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand.

John 10:28

How secure am I in Christ? Today’s text answers this question and should give us tremendous comfort. Gifts are, all things considered, a good thing. We are in the habit of giving gifts. We set aside seasons for it, have etiquette for it, and incorporate it into nearly every aspect of life. God is the Great Giver of gifts, He gives gifts that only the One True God can. ‘He gives to all life, breath, and all things.’

In the context of our text today, Christ is in controversy with the Pharisees. After they found great fault with His healing of the man born blind, Christ very clearly declares who He is and what He has come to do. In the midst of the controversy, He makes this clear statement, ‘I give unto them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of my hand.’ What a wonderful gift with a full guarantee! Christ declares Himself to be the Giver of the gift. Salvation is from start to finish, the work of God. Christ adamantly declares, ‘I give.’ Christ identifies His people as the receivers of the gift. We ought never to be afraid of any truth which God plainly declares. The truth of God’s electing purpose is all over the Scriptures. Peter, Paul, John and holy men of God in book after book articulate it. We may humbly rejoice in the election of God.

Christ reveals that eternal life is the gift itself. Life and death are large concepts. Eternal life and eternal death are even larger concepts. Eternal life cannot be earned, bought or stolen. It is purely and simply, the gift of God. Not only that, but, like all the best gifts, it comes with a guarantee. Again, Christ is adamant, ‘they shall never perish!’ He underscores it with, ‘neither shall any man snatch them out of my hand!’ Above all, Saint of God, this ought to be the security in which you may rest today. Christ is yours, and you are His. . . Forever.

Our Gracious and Loving Savior
We rest in You and
Your unfailing Hands today.
