God’s Comforts, Our Delight

In the multitude of my anxieties within me,

Your comforts delight my soul.

Psalm 94:19

Do you ever worry? Or, even more so, could you ever describe yourself as ‘anxious?’ Perhaps you may even find yourself having those most unpleasant visitors called ‘anxiety attacks.’ The writer of the Psalm before us declared that he had a ‘multitude of anxieties.’ That is quite a personal admission. We don’t like to admit to that, do we? This text shines like a diamond on a background of black velvet. In the midst of dark cogitation the Psalmist declares that when he has a multitude of anxieties, God’s comforts are a delight to his soul. So it may be for us. In truth, we may have a number of anxieties even a ‘multitude.’ We are not certain who wrote this psalm, however, if perchance it was David, we can observe in his life many occasions when he may have had a ‘multitude of anxieties.’ Whether in the days of his youth when he was surrounded by lions and bears. Perhaps when he was murderously pursued by family, or in his old age, when his own children conspired against him, he was often in great straits. We may be much the same. We do want to understand, however, that Christ has more comforts that we have anxieties. Search the Scriptures and you will find a promise or a comfort to more than cover all your anxieties. That is one of the values of a daily perusal of the Word of God, in devotional reading we find God redirects us to what will calm our troubled soul. When the Holy Spirit takes the things of Christ, from the Scriptures, and shows them unto us, it delights us to think that the God of Glory is interested enough in our comfort to speak to us personally. Hear His voice today, and delight in His comforts.

Great Lord and Master,
help us with our anxieties today.
Thank you for your great and precious promises.
We delight and rejoice in Your comforts.
