Lead Me to The Rock
Lead Me to The Rock
From the end of the earth I will cry to You, When my heart is overwhelmed; Lead me to the rock that is higher than I.
Psalm 61:2
David was a man of wide and varied experience. By turns he had been a shepherd, the champion of Israel, the court musician, a fugitive, a mercenary, and the King of his nation. He was both poet and penitent; the “man after God’s own heart.” The Psalms provide Holy Spirit inspired insights into the emotional life of the man of God. Those emotions range from praise, to elation, to joy, hope and peace. There is also the evidence in them of fear, depression and despondency; the full range of human emotions. We are emotional creatures, very much affected by our circumstances.
Our text for today is a cry from a soul desolate and in turmoil. This cry may well be our cry today. In our loneliest and most distressing hours let us cry to our God to bring us again to rest upon Christ. The Psalmist speaks of being at ‘the end of the earth’ thereby pointing out what we know to be true of ourselves, that is, that we suffer lonely and distressing seasons when our ‘heart is overwhelmed.’ As others have said, ‘every heart knows it’s own sorrow.’ Catastrophic grief and loss may make us feel utterly alone. Our dreams lie in shattered pieces at our feet. We have no hope and we fear no help. Our only recourse is to our Sovereign God to whom we can cry. That cry may not be eloquent or long yet God does not despise it. He never misses anything, never sleeps, and never allows one thing to slip from His Almightly grasp. He is able to lead us again to Christ, Who is the Rock higher than we are. Christian, Christ is higher than the sins for which you cannot forgive yourself. He is higher than your faith, higher than your hopes, higher than your fears. He is higher than your circumstances. Are you friendless? Christ is the friend that ‘sticketh closer than a brother.’ Helpless? Christ ‘lifts up the downcast.’ Shut in? Christ is the Great Liberator. Adrift? Christ is the sure foundation. Call upon your God you desolate soul at the ends of the earth. Cry out with the psalmist, “Lead me to the Rock that is higher than I!”
Gracious God, lead us to Christ.
Whatever our condition today,
lead us to the Rock that is higher than ourselves,
hear our cry and lift us up.
