Not Now, But After This

Jesus answered and said to him, “What I am doing you do not understand now, but you will know after this.”

John 13:7

Have you ever observed some circumstance unfolding in your life and thought to yourself, ‘I have no idea what’s going on here?’ I certainly have. On the night before He went to the cross, Christ took the position of the servant and washed His disciples’ feet. Peter objected. In the midst of the interchange, Christ makes a remark that serves as a text for all time in many of our circumstances of life. He says, ‘What I am doing you do not understand now, but you will know after this.’  Herein lies large matters of faith. The fact is, Christ is always doing something in our life. We tend to look at the second cause much more frequently without seeing the First Cause in the background. We do well to consider that the things which occur in our lives come from the hand of Our Loving Christ. This is very much a matter of having confidence in Him as the First Cause. We also should realize that we rarely understand what He is doing at the time. Peter certainly did not. It perhaps took years for him to fully understand the illustration Christ employed. So we may not understand today, or yet for many years, the meaning of what Christ is doing by the means of a particular occurrence. We are left, not just to trust His Person, but also to trust His Work. He does promise to make things clear to us in His Own Time. That may be in this scene of time, or it may be in eternity. If we can trust His Person and we can trust His Work, then we can trust His Timing. He is seldom early, but He is never late. He will make it clear to us in His Time.

Our Great Savior,
We trust You,
Your Work and Your Timing.
You do what is best for us.
