Incomparable Works, Wondrously Done

Among the gods there is none like You, O Lord; Nor are there any works like Your works. All nations whom You have made shall come and worship before You, O Lord, and shall glorify Your name. For You are great, and do wondrous things; You alone are God.

Psalm 86: 8-10

The Works of God are the natural outgrowth of the Person of God. God is, Himself, Good. As He is, so He does. Our text today is a marriage of two related statements, ‘Nor are there any works like your works…. For You are great, and do wondrous things.’  Other Scriptures express this concept as well, ‘The heavens declare the glory of God, and the firmament shows His handiwork.’ We have but to look around to see the wondrous works of this Great God.  No other god creates ‘out of nothing,’ speaks galaxies into existence or calls blazing suns forth from His Own sheer Imagination. Moreover, all the things we behold, great and small, simple and intricate, bear testimony to the wondrous work of God. Nowhere does His wondrous work shine more brightly than in the Person and Work of Christ. In the Person and Work of Christ there shines a veritable universe of virtues and blessing. Behold the pearls of His Character set upon the intertwined strands of the Gold of His Divinity and the Silver of His Humanity. See the Outshining of His Glory, in His Justice and His Mercy. Behold His Glorious Exaltation, shining like a cluster of diamonds set against the black velvet of His Humiliation. See Him Reign from the Cross, and Intercede from the Throne. All the wondrous works of God, find their fullest expression in His Work of Redemption. In gazing upon Christ, we catch the clearest sight of how truly wondrous the works of God really are.

Our Gracious, Creating, Redeeming God,
we look upon your work and see Your Son.
Give us a clear sight of your wondrous works.
