A Song From the Cave
Song From the Cave
My heart is steadfast, O God, my heart is steadfast; I will sing and give praise.
Psalm 57:7
Christ gives His people the ability to overcome the most adverse of situations, and to be joyful in the most unlikely places. Our text today alludes to one such circumstance in the life of David. Saul, the King, David’s father-in-law was chasing him all over Israel with murderous intentions. David had been able to successfully escape and evade Saul thus far. He finally resorted to the Cave of Adullam. For a time, this was his only refuge. Caves are dark, gloomy places. They are not conducive to singing. It was here, however, that David composed this Psalm and in it lies our text, “My heart is steadfast, O God, my heart is steadfast; I will sing and give praise.” The following verses show how David could be ‘steadfast’ and ‘singing.’ David could trust in His Merciful, Truthful, and Exalted Christ, even when his reality was what he describes in the verses preceding our text; that his ‘soul was among lions.’ A clear sight of Christ makes for a steadfast singing heart. We may, by force of circumstance find ourselves in cave-like situations, if not literally, figuratively; yet a clear sight of the Merciful, Truthful, Exalted Christ will steady our unstable heart and open our mouth with song. So the cave becomes a cathedral and the dungeon fills with light. Christ stabilizes our unsteady heart, and is the song of our devoted lips. Regardless of your reality today, look to Christ. He will give you a steadfast heart and a song of praise.
Our Great and Gracious Master,
we sing the song of the Redeemed.
In our darkest hours and our darkest places,
You give us songs of praise.
