Keeping Faith With God

I will pay my vows unto the Lord now in the presence of all his people.

Psalm 116:14

As we continue our consideration of the response of the faithful soul to the gracious benefits of God, we come to our text for today. ‘I will pay my vows unto the Lord now in the presence of all his people.’ Here is another way in which we may ‘give back,’ in response to the abundant blessings which God has graciously bestowed upon us. The Psalmist declares that he will ‘pay my vows to the Lord, now in the presence of all His people.’ What exactly does that mean? Perhaps it may be helpful to consider what are the most important vows that we perhaps make in our lives, our marriage vows. We vow ‘to love, honor, cherish, to be faithful and keep to him or her alone.’ We promise closeness, care, consideration, and consistency. All of us who have taken these vows understand how important it is to ‘keep faith’ with the person to whom we have made them. To fail to do so causes a breach of trust which can scarcely ever be overcome. The Psalmist declares that he will ‘pay’ his ‘vows.’ He will ‘keep faith’ with God. Christ is the Bridegroom. We are His Bride. What shall we render unto Christ our Divine Husband, ‘for all His benefits to us?’ We shall ‘keep faith’ with Him. No other erstwhile lover will woo us away. No other one will have more of our loyalty, or attention. No one else shall count more importantly with us than He, Who has lived, died, risen, and Who yet intercedes for us. We shall ‘keep faith’ with Christ. He is and shall ever be, our ‘One and Only.’ So may we pay our vows.

Our Loving Savior, we hold You and Your Love above all others,
we praise You, that You have first loved us,
and desire with warm and fervent hearts to return deep love to You.
