The Power of Christ to Transform

On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Now both Jesus and His disciples were invited to the wedding. And when they ran out of wine, the mother of Jesus said to Him, “They have no wine.” Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does your concern have to do with Me? My hour has not yet come.” His mother said to the servants, “Whatever He says to you, do it.” Now there were set there six waterpots of stone, according to the manner of purification of the Jews, containing twenty or thirty gallons apiece. Jesus said to them, “Fill the waterpots with water.” And they filled them up to the brim. And He said to them, “Draw some out now, and take it to the master of the feast.” And they took it. When the master of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and did not know where it came from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom. And he said to him, “Every man at the beginning sets out the good wine, and when the guests have well drunk, then the inferior. You have kept the good wine until now!”  This beginning of signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory; and His disciples believed in Him.

John 2:1-11

We have before us Christ’s inaugural miracle. It is, in many ways, unique. John alone mentions it. It occurs in a small venue, and apparently affects very few people. There are elements of this first miracle which give us indications of things to come. At the root of the miracle is that it demonstrates the power of Christ to transform. He would demonstrate this power over and over again in a variety of circumstances. In each of those circumstances, He would do works of powerful transformation. He would transform the blind into those who could see. He would transform the lame into those who could walk. He would transform the unclean lepers into those who were clean. He would transform the dead into those who were living. All these miracles, and more, demonstrated Christ’s power to transform. We ourselves have experienced this transforming power of Christ. We look back upon our own history. There we see all the negative elements of personality, character, and practice. We were so much in need of the transforming power of Christ. Consider how, in our own life, He has turned our water into wine. How greatly has He changed us. Today we rejoice in the Christ Who transforms, and in the demonstration of His power to transform. What a Wonderful Savior; what a great transformation.

O, Gracious Savior,
we rejoice daily in You
and in Your never-ending Power to transform us.
Evermore continue that work,
until we are all that You would have us to be.
