A Personal Sight of Christ

A Personal Sight of Christ

A Personal Sight of Christ

 …I shall see God.

Job 19:26

Job was a soul, utterly bereft of human comfort. All of his sources of joy and hope were gone, for all intents and purposes. How was he to endure such overwhelmingly crushing blows? With what could he console himself in the face of the loss of possessions, family, health, and support? Job’s hope was in Christ, and that he would yet behold Him, face to Face. As we begin the meditation which will carry us through the next few days, we will take this text word, by word, ‘I shall see God.’ We begin with the most personal of pronouns, ‘I.’ The pronouns of Scripture are important. Here, Job comforts himself, in the midst of all his hardships, with the encouragement, ‘I shall see God.’ In the deepest and most horrific of situations, as well as all the post-traumatic experiences that follow them, second-hand experience simply will not do. It is not enough for me to know that others of the saints of God have seen Christ. It is not enough that I can read the blessed assurances which appear in Holy Writ. It is of the utmost importance that I be able to say, ‘I shall see God.’ Nothing else replaces a personal sight of Christ. Here is our high ground today. No matter how adverse our situation, no matter how many things stand against us; no matter how much we are bereft of all earthly comfort, we have this certain hope: ‘I shall see God.’

Our ever Living and Loving Lord, we praise You,
that we have the Glorious prospect, of looking into Your Eternal Eyes,
and that every day draws us closer to that holy hour,
when we shall see You face to Face.
