Looking Unto Jesus

Looking Unto Jesus

Looking Unto Jesus

But my eyes are upon You, O GOD the Lord; In You I take refuge.

Psalm 141:8

The Old Testament and the New Testament exist in total and complete harmony. They exist together as a unified, coherent whole. Because they do, we may find statements in the Old Testament that are very evangelical in nature and full of Christ. Our text today is one such statement. In Hebrews 12:1-2 we find the exhortation to, ‘look unto Jesus.’ In our text for today, David says, ‘my eyes are upon you.’ Here is a word for our souls that will focus our attention upon Christ and fix our eyes upon Him. When we were lost and undone, poisoned and dying from the deadly bite of the serpent, did not God direct our attention to Christ, much in the same way in which Moses directed the dying Israelites to the brazen serpent in the wilderness? They looked and lived. So, we look to Christ and live as well. As we run the race of the Christian life, to which Hebrews 12 makes direct reference, do we not find that ‘looking unto Jesus’ is the only way for us to successfully make spiritual progress on a daily basis? When we find ourselves beset by difficulties and in dire straits, as David describes in Psalm 141, do we find that it is only as we fix our eyes upon Christ that we find calm, direction, hope, and refuge?  From beginning to end, Christ is the Great Object of our attention. So may We pray, ‘Be Thou my Vision, O, Lord of my Heart; naught be all else to me save that Thou art.’ Yes, today and every day, ‘my eyes are upon you.’

Our most High and Holy God,
we look unto You when we are in the farthest corner of the earth.
Fill all our vision, with the ever increasing sight of Christ.
