Our Unchanging Christ

Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today, and forever.

Hebrews 13:8

We live in a changing world, and are constantly changing ourselves. Although we look into the mirror day by day, and can often barely discern the changes, yet, they are there, and very real. In the midst of all this change, which is occurring both within us and around us, we desire constancy. Where shall we find it? Where is that which is so permanent and unchanging that we can find security for our souls? Our text for today sets this forth for us in glorious fashion, ‘Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today, and forever.’ What a wonderful declaration! Here is constancy; here is continuity; here is security. Christ was the same in eternity before the world began. His Love was fervent, strong, and pure. His regard for us, His people, was already firmly fixed and unwavering. His Plan and Purpose to do all that was necessary, to bring ‘many sons to glory’ was already fixed and unalterable. He is the same today. Having accomplished all that was necessary, by His Perfect Life, Atoning Death, and Glorious Resurrection, Christ is, even now, continuing to act on behalf of His Elect by His continual Intercession on behalf of His Blood-bought people. Christ shall continue to be the same, and that forever. Time and circumstance shall not change Him in any way whatsoever. He is and shall ever be, the Prophet, Priest, and King of His People. He is ‘the same, yesterday, today, and forever.’ ‘Change and decay, in all around I see.  O, Thou who changest not, abide with me.’

Our Most Gracious Unchanging God,
we rejoice that You are the same from age to age,
and that Your years fail not.
Abide with us we pray, through all our changing seasons of life.
