Beginning At Moses

And beginning at Moses and all the Prophets, He expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.

Luke 24:27

Christ is at the very heart of Bible preaching. One cannot claim to preach the Word of God while making but scant reference to the Person and Work of Christ. If we would learn to preach Christ, we should learn from the Master Himself. On the afternoon after Christ rose from the dead He made a point of drawing alongside two disciples who were on their way to Emmaeus. As He did, He first questioned them regarding their sadness, and then began to preach to them. Our text today speaks of Christ, ‘preaching Christ.’ ‘And beginning at Moses and all the Prophets, He expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.’ This lays to rest forever the question of whether we ought to preach from the Old Testament. Christ is everywhere throughout the Old Testament. He is the Creator of Genesis 1, walked with Adam and Eve in the Garden, and is the Seed of the Woman. Abel’s lamb typifies Him, as does Abraham’s lamb in Genesis 22. He is Melchizedek in Genesis 14, and the Visitor in Genesis 19. He is the Burning Bush of Exodus 3 and the Fiery, Cloudy Pillar in the Wilderness. He is the Giver of the Commandments, and the One Who showed His Glory to Moses. He is the Messenger of Jehovah, and the Son of God in the burning fiery furnace. The tabernacle was full of types and symbols that pointed to Him, and the High Priest pre-figured His Mediatorial Office. Everywhere we find Christ. Let us dive headlong into the glorious depths of the Old Testament and see if once again Christ will begin ‘at Moses and the prophets’ and expound to us ‘the things concerning Himself.’

Our most Holy and Wise Savior,
we praise You that You ever reveal Yourself to us.
We rejoice that in ‘Your Light, we see light.’

  1. My favorite sermons you preached were the ones about the Lod from the a Old Testament.
