‘I Am He Who Lives…Forevermore’

I am He who lives, and was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore. Amen. And I have the keys of Hell and of Death.

Revelation 1:18

We have been dwelling upon the resurrection of Christ for these past days, and upon the ramifications of it for us. Today we arrive at the words of Christ Himself regarding His Own resurrection. John, the last surviving Apostle, saw Christ in Glory. John wrote his testimony in the first chapter of the Book of Revelation. Within the context of this post-resurrection appearance of Christ, He utters the words which serve as our text today, ‘I am He who lives, and was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore. Amen. And I have the keys of Hell and of Death.’ Let us take some time, please, to pore over these words from the Mouth of Christ Himself. Here we find that Christ proclaims His Own Vitality. He declares, “I am He that lives.’ He goes on, later, to declare ‘and behold, I am alive forevermore.’ Christianity rests its veracity upon the fact that Christ is alive. We are aware that He was alive before the world began, for so testifies the Scripture. We know that He was alive at the creation, for again, so says the Word of God. We know that He was alive in ancient days when the patriarchs roamed the earth, for He said, ‘Before Abraham was, I AM.’ We know that He was alive in the days of His Incarnation, for witness after witness testifies of their encounters with Him. We know that He is alive now, for the testimony of the Apostles was that they saw Him,’alive after His passion.’ Hear His Own Words of testimony today, ‘I am He who lives, and was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore. Amen. And I have the keys of Hell and of Death.’ There is no successful denial of this, His Personal Testimony. Jesus Lives.

Our most Glorious, Living Christ,
we rejoice that You, living, die no more.
We praise You that we follow no dead leader,
but One that is alive and that, forevermore.
