“Mary!”

“Mary!”

“Mary!”

Jesus said to her, “Mary!”

John 20:16

The death of Christ shattered His followers. No one else was perhaps more thoroughly devastated than Mary Magdalene, out of whom Christ had cast many devils. On the Sunday morning after His passion, Mary came to the grave to see what good she could do to what was left of Him. She was unprepared to encounter the Living Christ, yet, there He was. As she stood in the garden before the tomb weeping, Christ engaged her in conversation. She, not knowing who He was, simply, asked for His Body that she might take it away. Christ speaks but one word of revelation to her. He calls her by name. Here is our text for today. ‘Jesus said to her, “Mary.”‘ What may we draw from this for the uplifting of our souls today? Certainly, one thing for us to consider is that Christ will meet with those who seek Him. Mary, even after all hope was gone, was yet seeking Christ and He did not disappoint. Also, we may consider that Christ called her by name. Christ takes a personal interest in those who are seeking Him. Beyond that, Christ revealed Himself to her in a greater way than she could have imaged. She was prepared to do service to a dead Christ and lo, she found a Living One. Let us today, go forth to the Word of God, to the place of prayer, to the people we encounter, seeking Christ, and see if He will meet us there, in ways we could not have anticipated.

Our Gracious, all Glorious Christ,
we rejoice that You still condescend
to those of us who are of low estate,
We praise You, that You will still meet with us,
who are still seeking You.
