‘And Dine With Him’

‘And Dine With Him’

‘And Dine With Him’

Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.

Revelation 3:20

It is interesting to note the humble things which Christ employs to draw us unto Himself. Notice, please, the statement in the text we have recently been contemplating. “I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.’ With this promise Christ holds out to us the prospect of close communion and fellowship with Him.  Food is a great social unifier, especially in the culture in which Christ immersed Himself.  Food was what symbolized unity, friendship, fellowship and closeness. It is, perhaps, not too much of a stretch to consider that in three of the significant post-resurrection appearances of Christ, He incorporated food. In Luke 24 when Christ appeared to the two on the road to Emmaeus, He concluded His appearance at the dinner table. The conversation prior to that conclusion was one in which Christ had preached Himself from the Old Testament. In the same chapter, when Christ appeared to the gathered disciples, He ate fish and honeycomb. The result of that appearance, was that the disciples believed that He had risen from the dead. When Christ later appeared to the disciples at the Sea of Tiberius in John 20, He gave them success in their previously unsuccessful efforts, ate breakfast with them, and then gave them instructions for their future. These are all benefits of, ‘I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.’ Communion with Christ brings with it spiritual benefits of various types. Let us today dwell upon the benefits of this blessed communion.  Let us heed His invitation today to ‘come and dine.’

Our most Gracious and Loving Savior,
we rejoice today, that You would bid us come into Your Presence,
that we would enjoy abundant fellowship with You,
and by that fellowship, grow to be more like You.
