Kept Through His Name
Kept Through His Name
Now I am no longer in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to You. Holy Father, keep through Your name those whom You have given Me, that they may be one as we are.
John 17:11
As we return to a passage we considered last week, we return also to a theme we dwelt upon at that time. In His High Priestly Prayer, Christ articulates the things He wants God, His Father to do for His people. One of those things forms our text for today, ‘Now I am no longer in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to You. Holy Father, keep through Your name those whom You have given Me, that they may be one as we are.’ Let us dwell upon this portion of the verse, ‘keep through Your Own Name those whom You have given me.’ Christ is vitally interested in our preservation. He associates that preservation with the Name of God. One of the blessings and benefits of our adoption is that we bear His Name. God sets much store by His Name. Here Christ appeals to His Father that He would, ‘keep through Your Own Name,’ the elect of God. It is as if the Never-failing, Ever-watchful, Holy, Jealous God places His Almighty Hand between His children and all who would do them harm. God is the Great Preserver of His people. At times he preserves us from death, at other times he preserves us by death. He keeps us through our trials or brings us home to deliver us from our trials. Either way, ‘we know that all things work together for good, to them that love God, to them that are the called, according to His purpose.’ This is Christ’s desire for you today, Child of Grace. The Father will do all that His Son desires for your good and His Glory.
Our most powerful Preserving God,
We praise You, that You are the Great Guard of Your people.
We rejoice that You deliver us from every evil work,
and will preserve us unto your Heavenly Kingdom.
