The Everlasting Father

The Everlasting Father

The Everlasting Father

For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Isaiah 9:6

One of the Titles of Christ we find in this ancient prophecy is the one before us, ‘The Everlasting Father,’ or ‘The Father of Eternity.’  The inspired author is not confounding the Persons of The Trinity; rather, he is expounding a particular aspect of the Ministry of Christ. How is Christ ‘The Everlasting Father?’  He is so, in that He relates to His people as a father does to his well-beloved child.  In a healthy relationship between a child and a father there is a peaceful confidence and communion.  I can go to my Father, knowing that He believes in me.  He loves me for who I am, not just for what I do, or fail to do well.  He believes in me.  He is proud of me.  He is glad to claim me.  He is glad that I am His.  He will listen to me as I speak to Him of things that may be important or trivial in the grander scheme of things.  He will listen to me as I pour out my broken heart and articulate my fears.  He will be behind me to encourage me as I take my next step in life.  He will never leave me, or forsake me.  He is my Helper, my Guide, my Friend, my Deliverer, my Confessor, my Confidant.  From before I was, until a never-ending eternity, He is my Everlasting Father.

Our Gracious and Loving Savior,
we rejoice that You wrap us in Your warm embrace,
hold us close to Your Gentle Breast,
and show Yourself, in every way, to be our Everlasting Father.
