The Inevitable Conclusion

And not many days after, the younger son gathered all together, journeyed to a far country, and there wasted his possessions with prodigal living. But when he had spent all, there arose a severe famine in that land, and he began to be in want. Then he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country, and he sent him into his fields to feed swine. And he would gladly have filled his stomach with the pods that the swine ate, and no one gave him anything. “But when he came to himself, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger!’”

Luke 15:13-17

Choices…have consequences. The young man whom we began to discuss yesterday, made some very bad choices, for which he paid dearly. After his father had, ‘divided to them his livelihood,’ our passage tells us, ‘And not many days after, the younger son gathered all together, journeyed to a far country, and there wasted his possessions with prodigal living’. This led to the inevitable conclusion of which we read in verse fourteen. ‘But when he had spent all, there arose a severe famine in that land, and he began to be in want. Then he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country, and he sent him into his fields to feed swine. And he would gladly have filled his stomach with the pods that the swine ate, and no one gave him anything. But when he came to himself, he said, “How many of my father’s hired servants have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger!”‘ Here is where we all find ourselves when we have made poor choices. We have, like the prodigal son, been selfish and self-serving. This brings us to the end of our resources, and ultimately to the end of ourselves. There is no way for us, as we write this little volume day by day to know into whose life it will find its’ way. Perhaps you are reading this today and you identify with this young man. You have lived for yourself. You have made choices which were wholly and solely to satisfy your own selfish desires. This has led you to the desolate situation in which you now find yourself. You are at the end of your resources, and at the end of yourself. What now? Where will you go? What will you do? To whom will you turn? Allow us today to plead with you. There is only one road down which you can go to get to the place of hope, of health, of peace, and of happiness. It is our privilege to point you to Christ, Who is the Road down which you must travel.

Our Gracious, Loving God,
and our Blessed Heavenly Father,
we confess unto You our sins, our selfishness,
and our great need of You.
Once again, today, we pray, that You will lift up our eyes,
to show us Christ.
