The Sacrifice of Christ For His People

Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her….

Ephesians 5:25

Our contemplation of the spirit of Christ toward His people, leads us, very naturally, to consider, the Sacrifice of Christ for His people. Our text for today summarizes it succinctly, ‘…And gave Himself for her.’ The ‘her’ is ‘the Church,’ ‘The bride of Christ,’ the ‘Body to His Head,’ the ‘Redeemed of all ages.’ What kind of Husband is this Christ? He ‘gave Himself for her.’ He had the worship of angels, but departed heaven for her. He was, ‘in the form of God,’ but ‘made Himself of no reputation,’ for her. He was, ‘made in the likeness of men,’ for her. He ‘humbled Himself,’ for her. He ‘became obedient unto death,’ for her, ‘even the death of the cross,’ He endured, for her. Here is a Husband, who has, in every way, proven Himself to be worthy of love, of admiration, of devotion, and of obedience. Here is a spirit of love like unto no other. Here is a Sacrifice over and above all other sacrifices. ‘He is altogether lovely.’ This is a Sacrifice which continues in the sense that even now, ‘He ever lives to make intercession for us,’ by the holding up of the Objective Plea of His Blood. Christ’s Work for His people, in that sense, never ceases. Today, let us dwell upon His Sacrifice, and so draw near to Him.

Most Gracious, Holy, Savior,
we praise You, that you have Ransomed our souls.
We rejoice that our testimony today is, ‘Jesus paid it all.’
