The Savior of the Body: The Son’s Humiliation

For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body.

Ephesians 5:23

As we continue our meditation upon our text, ‘He is the Savior of the Body,’ we come to dwell upon the Role of Christ, the Son, in the salvation of His Body, the Church. What the Father has ordained, the Son effects. This touches upon two elements of Christ’s work in His Incarnation. In truth, it represents all of His Humiliation, from His taking to Himself ‘a true body and a reasonable soul,’ to His ‘continuing under the power of death for a time.’ The two elements to consider, however, are His active and passive obedience. By His perfect life, Christ fulfilled all the demands of the Law of God in precept. Not one thing that the Law requires did Christ fail to fulfill. Not one command of the Law did He break. He omitted nothing and He committed nothing. He was active in fulfilling the Law in this respect. The other element for us to consider is His passive obedience. In His death upon the cross, Christ fulfilled the Law of God in penalty. He made substitutionary atonement, and by that actually purchased redemption for all whom the Father had given HIm. This is integral to His bearing of the title, ‘The Savior of the Body.’ Let us dwell today upon the high cost of our redemption. In every way, ‘Jesus paid it all.’

we rejoice today in redemption accomplished and applied.
We praise You that we are saved for all eternity,
by the Blood of the Lamb.
