The Sum of One Life

The Sum of One Life

Moses was one hundred and twenty years old when he died….

Deuteronomy 34:7

We have before us the declaration of the sum of the years of the life of Moses, the man of God. It is the ‘dash upon his headstone’ that rests between the date of his birth and the date of his death. It is the point from which we can cast an eye back over the one hundred and twenty years of his experience. When we consider those one hundred and twenty years, we find that they divide rather definitively into three distinct periods: these are his days in Egypt, his days in Midian, and his days in the wilderness. In these three periods he was, by turns: The Son of Pharoah’s Daughter; The Shepherd of Jethro’s Flocks; and The Savior of the Nation of Israel. What stands out as we view his life, is that the first two thirds of his life were preparation for the last third of his life. He was first a scholar, then a servant, and after that a savior. Herein we find both a likeness to Christ, Who was many years in preparation before entering into public ministry, and also some excellent lessons for us regarding the things which God does in our lives in order to prepare us to fulfill the ultimate purpose for which He has made us. We do not know how many years we have, but we do know that in whatever years He has appointed for us, Christ intends to give us all the experiences which will best fit us to glorify Him.

Our most Gracious, Holy, and Wise God,
we praise You that You have appointed all our days.
We rejoice that we exist to bring You glory,
honor and praise for all those days.
